His best long jump outdoors was 23’6”, which still ranks him among the top ten performers at Malone. He won multiple long jump and triple jump championships in the Mid-Ohio Conference, NAIA District 22, and the National Christian College Athletic Association. In the latter, Armstrong was named Co-MVP of the inaugural meet, winning both jumps and running on both winning relays. In the summer of 1972, Armstrong was named to a team of Christian U.S. track athletes who toured Africa and Israel. In 1973, he was a long jump finalist at the NAIA Outdoor National Championships, finishing seventh.

Armstrong later earned an M.Ed. and Ph.D. from Ashland University and Kent State University, respectively. He served at Malone University, Northwest Nazarene University, Baldwin Wallace University and Olivet Nazarene University in various roles, including professor, athletic director, and track and cross country coach. He is married to Rev. Dr. Susan Welch Armstrong. They currently reside in Kankakee, Illinois. The couple has one son and two grandchildren.
