Murphy, a 1959 Malone graduate (Bachelor Religious Education), was a three-year letterman in basketball at the college. At Van Wert High School, he played four years of baseball and basketball and was an Honorable Mention All-Ohio selection in basketball in 1953. He then attended Adrian College as a freshman and competed in the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City that season (1954-55). He played two seasons at Malone (Malone’s first two basketball seasons) and averaged 17.0 points per game his senior year. Murphy, who was elected to the Adrian College Hall of Fame in 1996, also has an M.A. in Education from St. Francis College (IN) 1967. 

He and his wife, Dottie, have four grown children and reside in Mechanicsville, Virginia. He is retired from Public School education in which he served 10 years as a teacher and 27 years as an administrator.
