Smith, a 1967 graduate of the King’s (NY) College, has been the head men’s basketball coach at Malone since 1983. He is also an associate professor of physical education and has been the college’s Athletic director since 1987. Currently in his 11th season as men’s basketball coach at Malone. Smith had a 216-107 record (669) at Malone and a 390-254 record (606) overall before the ’93 –’94 season. He had led Malone to 10 straight winning seasons and a pair of NAIA national tournament appearances. Along with being the winningest basketball coach ever at Malone, he ranks in the top 20 among the NAIA’s winningest active men’s basketball coaches.

Smith currently serves on the NAIA’s National Tournament Committee and has served on numerous other basketball associations and committees. He is also a former NCCAA National Basketball Chairman, having held the position for six years. Smith and his wife Barbara reside in Canton and have three children. Heather, 1991 Malone graduate, Dan, a Malone senior, and Janell, a sophomore at McKinley High school.
