Hershberger, a 1980 graduate of Malone, was a four-year letterman in men's basketball at the college. A team captain in 1977, 1979 and 1980, he was named the team's Most Valuable Player in 1980 and was an All-Conference selection that same season. In addition, he was second in voting for MVP of the conference in 1980. Playing at guard, Hershberger dished out 789 career assists which ranks second all-time at Malone. He also was selected to a Sports Ambassadors team that traveled to Australia and New Guinea in 1979 and to the SA team that toured China in 1980.

Hershberger, who also has a Masters in Education from Ashland University (1990) and a Masters in Counseling from Malone (1996), resides in Sugarcreek, Ohio with his wife, Deb, and their two daughters, Renee and Katelyn. He works as a guidance counselor at Hiland High School.
