Hazen, having coached cross country at Malone for over 50 years, has brought national recognition to the school through his highly successful athletic programs. His cross country teams have won both the Mid-Ohio Conference and the NAIA District 22 championships for the past 19th consecutive years. His 1972 team won the national championship and has since finished in the top four at the national meet seven times.

Hazen, also a professor of physical education, has coached the track team to 13 conference titles and 11 district championships. A total of 111 athletes have received NAIA All-American recognition for cross country. Along with this, many track and field All-Americans were made under the coaching of Jack Hazen.

When Malone switched over to the Division II NCAA in 2012, Hazen has so far developed 5 All-Americans in cross country and 5 in track and field (indoor and outdoor).

Hazen is arguably one of the most well-known distance coaches.
