Troyer, a 1991 Malone graduate (Elementary Education), was a four-year letterman in basketball and also lettered three years in baseball at the College. A standout at Berlin Hiland High School, he earned numerous basketball honors including District 5 Player of the Year in 1985 and 1986, Second Team All-Ohio in 1985 and First Team All-Ohio in 1986. In addition, he played in the North-South All-Star Game in 1986 and holds the record for most career field goals at Hiland (585). At Malone, he earned the team's Best Defense award (1987-88) and twice earned the Best Offense award (1988-89, 1989-90). He was a First Team All Mid-Ohio Conference selection in 1988-89 and a two-time All-NAIA District 22 recipient. He also earned NCCAA All-America recognition in 1989-90.

Troyer and his wife, Jennifer, have two children, Grant (7) and Kyle (5), and reside in Fredericksburg. He is a fourth-grade teacher for East Holmes Schools and is the head coach for the Hiland High School boys basketball team.
