Hopple, a 1991 Malone graduate (Elementary Education), was a four-year letterman in both cross country and track & field at the College. Prior to Malone, he graduated from Perry High School and was an All-Federal League selection and member of Perry's Stark County championship cross country team in 1985. In addition, he was a regional track qualifier in 1986. At Malone, Hopple was a member of the Pioneers' NAIA national runner-up cross country team in 1989 and a two-time NAIA cross country All-American (1988, 1989). He also was a two-time NAIA All-American in track & field (indoor three-mile and outdoor 10,000 meters in 1991).

Hopple also received a Masters degree from Ashland University in 1998. He and his wife, Julie, have one child, Anna (6 months), and reside in Canton. He is a seventh grade teacher at Faircrest Middle School.
