The Malone University women's golf team set the program's 18-hole team scoring record on Monday in Nashville, Tennessee during the opening round of Trevecca Nazarene University's Music City Invitational.
At Old Hickory Country Club, the Pioneers fired a round of 321 to edge the previous scoring record by one stroke. Last September, Malone fired identical scores of 322 during each round of Ohio Dominican University's Cumberland Trail Classic. 2018 Malone graduate
Melanie Smith combined with
Christina Williams,
Kelli Carroll,
Lauren Griggy and
Michelle Lori to set the record at the ODU event last fall.
This year, Williams, Carroll, Griggy and Lori once again left their marks on the record book along with freshman
Madison Justice.
"We are so proud of our team," commented head coach
Bill Eddins. "Today's round is a testament of their commitment and work ethic. We have dropped over 40 shots over the course of our fall season. We love how our team competes! This is a great tournament that includes some of the top NCAA Division II teams in the nation. The challenge is to come back tomorrow and play even better which we are very capable of doing!"
The Pioneers are currently ninth among the 20-team field. NCAA Division II No. 6 Grand Valley State University grabbed the day-one lead with a 297. The University of Indianapolis, the No. 1 team in Division II, is second at 301 and Tiffin University is third with a 304.
Williams is tied for seventh overall after posting a round of 74. Griggy was next for the Pioneers, currently tied for 39th with an 81. Carroll is tied for 48th after matching her previous career best with an 82. Justice followed with an 84 – her best round of the season to date – and Lori was right behind with an 85.
The final round of the Music City Invitational will be held on Tuesday.
