Robin Campbell Named G-MAC Top Freshman, Selana Reale Coach of the Year

2018-19 Great Midwest Women's Basketball All-Conference Awards

The Malone University women's basketball team took home two of the three Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) "of the Year" honors when the league announced its postseason awards during its annual banquet Thursday night.

Point guard Robin Campbell was chosen as the G-MAC Freshman of the Year while first-year head coach Selana  Reale was voted as the G-MAC Coach of the Year by her peers. Findlay's senior forward Anna Hintz was named the G-MAC Player of the Year.

In addition to be named the Freshman of the Year, Robin Campbell earned Second Team All-Conference recognition. The Allance, Ohio native and Marlington High School graduate led the Pioneers with 14.0 points per game, good for fifth-most in the conference, and second among G-MAC freshmen. In her first year as a Pioneer, she ranked 11th among all freshmen in NCAA Division II in scoring.

The 5'4" Campbell also led the G-MAC in assists per game (4.2) and minutes per game (36.2) and finished sixth in defensive rebounds, hauling in 4.7 a night. She averaged the most minutes of any freshman in DII and ranked fourth in assists.

Campbell, who set the tone early in her rookie year with 27 points in just her second collegiate game, shot 44.0% from the field this season and a team-high 42.7% from three-point range. She recorded two double-doubles, six blocked shots, and ranked second on the team with 30 steals.

Malone Graduate Selana  Reale, who like Campbell was an All-Conference point guard for the Pioneers, led her team to a berth in the G-MAC Championship in her first season in charge of the program. Malone finished 15-13 during the regular season, including a 13-9 record in conference play. The Pioneers earned the #6 seed in the Tournament where they were eliminated by G-MAC regular season co-Champion Cedarville.

Under Reale's guidance, the Pioneers had the number-one ranked defense in the conference, holding opponents to just 61.0 points per game and 37.8% shooting. Malone, which played only eight players for most of the season because of injuries, also finished ninth in DIi in fewest fouls per game. Offensively, the Pioneers ranked 25th in DII in made three-pointers and were third in the G-MAC in fewest turnovers.

The 15 wins for Malone marked a five-game improvement from last season and were the third-highest single-season total for the program in the last 12 seasons. After a slow start to the campaign, Reale and the Pioneers found their footing in early January and won 11 of their final 15 games. During a five-game win streak in early February, Malone snapped first-place Kentucky Wesleyan's 15-game win streak in an impressive home upset.

Reale was assisted this season by Deidre McKay and Olivia Besancon.
