Christina Williams Breaks Malone’s 18-Hole Scoring Record; Pioneers 7th At ODU

Sophomore Christina Williams fired a round of 71 on Sunday, smashing the program's 18-hole record by three strokes

Final Results

Malone University sophomore Christina Williams surpassed the Pioneers' all-time 18-hole scoring record with a round of 71 on Sunday at Ohio Dominican University's Cumberland Trail Classic.

Paced by Williams' performance, the Pioneers earned a seventh-place finish among 15 teams with a two-round total of 648.

Williams' one-under-par round on Sunday featured four birdies and eclipsed the previous Malone record of 74, established by Brooke Smith in 2001.

In the process, Williams also edged Malone's individual 36-hole record with her two-round total of 149 (78-71).

"It's exciting to break the all-time scoring record for Malone women's golf," said Williams.  "I started the day with a double and a bogey and knew I had to stay positive and turn it around.  I started hitting greens and making pars and had some good birdie looks and took advantage of those opportunities.  I'm really happy with our team too as we showed a lot of improvement this weekend! We will build on this tournament!"

Williams tied for third overall among a field of 83 competitors and was named to the Cumberland Trail Classic All-Tournament Team.

As a freshman in 2017, Williams had nearly matched the Pioneers' school record at the same ODU event as she posted identical rounds of 75 for a two-round score of 150.  One year later, Williams moved her name to the top of the Malone record book.

"I'm so happy for Christina," said Pioneer head coach Bill Eddins.  "She works as hard as anyone and really has earned that record by virtue of countless hours of hard work and preparation to be a champion. She will only continue to get better which means that we as a team will continue to get better and better. Christina makes our other players want to work harder and improve too."

Sophomore Lauren Griggy also had an excellent weekend for Malone, placing 21st with a total of 158.  After matching her previous career-best with a round of 80 on Saturday, Griggy trimmed two strokes off her total Sunday, firing a 78.

Senior Kelli Carroll was next for Malone, tying for 39th with a 166 (82-84).  Freshman Grace Bartlow followed with a 177 (84-93) and freshman Madison Justice posted a 179 (88-91).

"This was a good weekend for Malone women's golf," noted Eddins.  "We played our best golf of the season so far against a strong field. I'm really happy for Lauren Griggy who broke 80 for the 1st time in her collegiate career and senior Kelli Carroll had her best collegiate round ever with an 82!  Our freshman showed considerable improvement and each shot their personal best thus far and did a really good job maintaining their composure and competing through some adversity they each faced.  This was another positive step in the right direction!"

Up Next: The Pioneers will host the Malone Invitational on October 6-7 at Alliance Country Club.
