The Malone University football team is excited to announce 34 additions to the program. Entering their second year of full NCAA Division II membership, head coach
Eric Hehman and his staff worked hard to bring in an impressive list of players. A large contingent of the class hails from the state of Ohio, including six players from Stark County. The well-balanced group also features 14 players on the offensive side of the ball and 20 on defense.
Former Northwest High School standout
Bryan Jones and Ontario, Canada native
Kaleb Scott will look to provide depth and experience at the quarterback position. A large collection of talented running backs will compete for playing time in the backfield, led by Federal Player of the Year
Matt Blasiole, Genoa High School product
David Nutter and University of Cincinnati transfer Kyler Nutter.
Expected to make an immediate impact on the defensive front is nose guard
Lenny Broyles, who was ranked among the top four defensive linemen in the state of Kentucky by Rivals.com. The linebacking corps will also be bolstered by Massillon Washington standout Leslie Dudley and
Charlie Lawler, a member of Loveland High School's 2013 State Championship team.
"Our 2014 class is the most talent-laden group we have ever brought to Malone," commented Hehman. "It represents a GLIAC championship-caliber class that is a mesh of talent, character and academic achievement. On the football side, we have six players from Stark County and nearly 80% of the class is from Ohio. It includes a former Stark County Player of the Year in
Bryan Jones (2009) and 2013 Federal League Player of the Year,
Matt Blasiole. The class combined to score over 300 touchdowns in their high school careers as well as record over 25,000 yards of offense. On the defensive side of the ball, the group accumulated more than 1,000 tackles while accounting for nearly 50 turnovers and numerous touchdowns. We also have members from three OHSAA State Championship teams."
Hehman was also very pleased with the incoming players' accomplishments in the classroom. "Academically, the 2014 class has one of the highest average ACT score of any class in Malone football history," noted Hehman. "They boast a cumulative GPA above 3.0 as a whole. Additionally, multiple members of the 2014 class are being considered for the Malone Presidential Scholarship which recognizes excellence in the classroom, on the field and in the community. The coaching staff has done a tremendous job of assembling a fantastic class that is a great fit for the University and the program. We believe this class has the talent to take us to the next level and will allow us to compete for future GLIAC Championships."
Additional players will likely be added to this initial class over the next few weeks.
