Pioneers Take First Two Games from Lake Erie ; Gingerich Breaks Career Stolen Base Record

EASTLAKE, Ohio -- On Friday the Malone University baseball team opened up a four-game Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) weekend series with Lake Erie College at Classic Park.

Classic Park is the home stadium of the Lake County Captains, the Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians.

The Pioneers (15-24, 6-15 G-MAC) began the series with a 10-1 win in the first game.

They came right back and handed the Storm (3-30, 1-21 G-MAC) a 9-3 loss in the second game of the day to sweep the doubleheader.

Game 1 Highlights
After both sides went scoreless in the first inning, Malone was able to get on the scoreboard in the second.

The Pioneers loaded the bases. Cameron Martin was then hit by a pitch. Evan Balzano also drew a walk to pick up a RBI and put MU up 2-0 early on.

Those two runs would have been enough support for starting pitcher Mitch Maurer. He tossed the first seven innings on the mound, and only allowed three hits and one earned run.

However, Malone's offense continued to add insurance runs.

The Pioneers added two more runs to their total in the fourth inning, and then really put the game out of reach in the sixth.

Cameron Martin tripled home Tyson Gingerich. A RBI double by Jake Aleman allowed Martin to score, and JC Philippi also had a RBI in the inning.

All told, after six full innings of baseball Malone led 8-1.

The Pioneers added one run each in both the eighth and ninth innings, including the first career home run for Boston Black in the ninth, on their way to the 10-1 win.

Game 2 Highlights
Cameron Martin got the offense going once again in the second game with his RBI single in the top of the second inning. Balzano also recorded a RBI base hit in the inning to give Malone the early advantage.

The Storm responded with three runs on two hits in their half of the second, but it was all Pioneers the rest of the way.

Andrew Hanna's sacrifice fly in the third inning tied the game at 3-3.

Malone took the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning.

JT Tonelli's RBI double put MU up 4-3. Evan Swan made it 6-3 when his base hit scored both Tonelli and Philippi. Hanna capped off the inning with a run-scoring single to give Malone a 7-3 advantage.

The Pioneers added the final two runs to their total in the seventh, and then Tyler Jackson worked around a pair of walks in the bottom of the inning to shut the door on the 9-3 win.

PIONEER POINTS
  • Jake Aleman was 4-11 at the plate. He also had three RBIs and scored three runs himself to pace Malone's offense.
  • Cameron Martin added three more RBIs to his team-leading total of 34 this season.
  • Tyson Gingerich's stolen base in the second game gives him 80 for his career. That is a new school record, surpassing the mark set by Scott McIlvain from 2006-2009.
  • Malone's pitching staff combined for 18 strikeouts on the afternoon. Mitch Maurer led the way with seven in the first game.
  • Cooper Davies picked up his first win of the season in the second game. His final line of six innings pitched included six strikeouts and just the three earned runs.
  • Chase Jessee pitched two scoreless innings of relief in the first game.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The two teams will return to Eastlake tomorrow afternoon to conclude the series with another doubleheader.

First pitch from Classic Park is slated for 12:00 p.m.
