EASTLAKE, Ohio -- The Malone University baseball team returned to Classic Park on Saturday to wrap up their Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) series with the Lake Erie College Storm.
Lake Erie (4-31, 2-22) took game one by a final score of 5-4, but Malone (16-25, 7-16 G-MAC) came back in the second game with a 2-1 win.
With yesterday's doubleheader sweep and the game two win, the Pioneers take the weekend series three games to one.
Game 1 Highlights
JC Philippi opened up the scoring early with a RBI double in the top of the first inning.
Unfortunately Lake Erie quickly responded with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead.
The Pioneers loaded the bases in the third, and both
Cameron Martin and
Jake Aleman came around to score in the inning to give MU a 3-2 advantage.
Danny Miller, who had entered from the bullpen to start the second inning, kept the Storm bats off the board in the fourth.
However, LEC broke through for three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth to move ahead 5-3.
Malone did rally in the top of the seventh. The Pioneers loaded the bases with just one out in the inning.
Boston Black's single scored
Petey Taylor. Unfortunately Black was thrown out at second base before
Jake Aleman could score the game tying run, and Lake Erie held on for the 5-4 win.
Game 2 Highlights
Bryce Layton got the start on the mound for the series finale, and the freshman turned in a complete game performance. He scattered five hits, and allowed just one Lake Erie run to score over the nine innings. He also struck out four.
Malone's offense got him all of the run support that he needed in the fourth inning.
Andrew Hanna singled home
JC Philippi.
JT Tonelli also scored on a throwing error by Lake Erie to put the Pioneers ahead 2-0.
The Storm scored their only run of the game on a RBI triple in the fifth, but Layton held them in check the rest of the way to help give Malone the 2-1 victory.
