CANTON -- 34 days after the series originally began back on March 25, crosstown rivals Malone University and Walsh University were finally able to bring their 2022 season series to a close on Wednesday night at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium. 

Unfortunately for the Pioneers (16-26, 7-17 G-MAC), the Cavaliers (21-16, 12-11 G-MAC) were able to finish off the series sweep with a 10-3 win. 

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Walsh got a jump on Malone early on. The Cavaliers plated three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. 

A couple of innings later WU stretched their lead out to 6-0 with three more runs in their half of the fourth inning. 

Malone was finally able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth when JC Philippi, JT Tonelli, and Boston Black strung three consecutive singles together. Philippi came around to score on Black's base hit. 

In the very next at bat Clayton Criss reached on a fielder's choice. Tonelli scored on the play to make it a 6-2 game. 

Both teams went scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings, but Walsh broke through again with three more runs in the top of the seventh. 

The Pioneers responded with a sacrifice fly from Cameron Martin in the bottom half of the inning, but the Cavaliers got that run right back in the eighth. 

Walsh kept Malone's bats in check through their final two opportunities to pick up the 10-3 win. 

PIONEER POINTS

• Jake Aleman and Clayton Criss each had a pair of hits for Malone. Aleman has now had multiple hits in three of his last five games.
• Cameron Martin's RBI in the seventh inning pushes his team-leading season total to 38.
• Chase Jessee pitched 1.2 innings of relief. He allowed just the one earned run to score, and struck out three batters. He is second on the team this season with 40 strikeouts.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Malone will play their final home series of the 2022 season this weekend when the Pioneers host Ohio Dominican University. 

The series begins with a doubleheader on Friday. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
