SAAC Announces MSA Nominees for Top Male and Female Newcomers

The Malone University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) unveiled on Wednesday its Malone Sports Awards Nominees for Top Male and Female Newcomer, awarded to the best rookie athlete.

Fans are encouraged to once again vote through our social media channels with a percentage of fan vote counting towards the final tally. Award-winners will be announced next Wednesday, April 29th.

The (3) Nominees for Top Male Newcomer are:

Justin Betts (Soccer) – Betts led all Pioneer freshmen in minutes played (647) last year, appearing in 14 games and making four starts as a defender. He took five shots on the season, including one shot on goal. Betts was the only freshman to start and play against nationally-ranked Lake Erie in the G-MAC Tournament, totaling 87 minutes in the first-round matchup.
 
Caleb Cosentino (Swimming) – Cosentino finished second among Pioneers and 14th overall in scoring at the G-MAC/MEC Championships, reaching the A Finals in four events. He placed fourth in the 200 Fly, fifth in the 1650 Free, sixth in the 1000 Free, and seventh in 100 Fly. He earned G-MAC All-Conference Honorable Mention and cracked Malone's all-time top-10 in five separate events.
 
Bo Myers (Basketball) – Myers ranked third on the team with 12.6 points and second with 5.0 rebounds per game. He scored 20 points in a game nine times and led Malone in scoring on five occasions. Across the G-MAC, Myers led all true freshmen in scoring and was third in rebounds. Myers also led all G-MAC freshmen in three-pointers (65) and three-point shooting percentage (38.9%).

And the (3) Nominees for Top Female Newcomer are: 

Kelsey Byers (Softball) – Byers went 20-9 with a 2.20 ERA while posting 180 strikeouts in 191 innings pitched. She set school records in wins, strikeouts, and shutouts (4) while leading Malone to its best record in 17 years, and two victories at the G-MAC Championship. She ranked third among all DII freshmen in strikeouts and led all of the G-MAC in wins and strikeouts. Byers was named the G-MAC Freshman of the Year, First Team All-Conference, and Second Team All-Midwest Region.
 
Kayla Jarosz (Volleyball) – Jarosz was one of two Pioneers to play every set last fall. She averaged a team-high 2.67 kills per set and ranked second on the team with a .241 hitting percentage while adding 113 digs and 38 blocks. Among G-MAC Freshmen, Jarosz ranked second in both total kills and hitting percentage. She was one of just eight freshmen in all of DII with at least 320 kills and a .240 hitting %.
 
Macy Williams (Swimming) – Williams ranked second among Pioneers and 11th overall in scoring at the G-MAC/MEC Championships. She reached the A Final in four events, placing third in the 200 Free, fourth in the 100 Free, fifth in the 100 Back, and sixth in the 50 Free. Williams was named First Team All-Conference after the Pioneers won the 400 Free Relay while the 200 and 800 Relays finished second. She set two individual school records (200 Free, 100 Back) and was on three record-setting relays.
