The Malone University men's track & field team captured the first Great Midwest Athletic Conference Team Title in Pioneer athletics history after placing first among seven institutions at the G-MAC Indoor Championships in Cedarville, Ohio on Saturday. The Malone women also fared extremely well in their first G-MAC meet, placing third among the eight participating squads.
Malone swept the G-MAC's season-ending indoor track & field awards on the men's side. Head coach
Mark McClure was named the conference's Men's Coach of the Year, sophomore
Ashton Dulin was named the Men's Track Athlete of the Year, senior
Duke Taylor was tabbed G-MAC Men's Field Athlete of the Year and
Ja'Vonne Brashears collected G-MAC Men's Freshman of the Year accolades.
The team scoring was extremely close on both the men's and women's sides throughout the meet and the final outcome was not determined for either the men or women until the last few events were completed.
The Malone men finished the afternoon with 205.5 points to edge runner-up Cedarville University which totaled 192.50. Alderson Broaddus University was a distant third on the men's side with 66.5 points.
In the final standings for the women, Cedarville squeaked out the victory, slipping past Ursuline College by a 170-168 margin. Malone was a close third with 153 points.
Dulin collected the Track Athlete of the Year honor following an incredible performance on Saturday. Dulin won the men's long jump, the 55-meter hurdles and the 400-meter dash. He also took fourth in the 200 meters (22.98) and teamed up with
Tyler Harroun,
Michael Jankowski, and
Daniel Brown to take fourth in the 4 x 400-meter relay (3:38.54). In each of the three events that Dulin won, he established new G-MAC Indoor Championship Meet records while also claiming spots on Malone's Top 10 performances list with each of his marks
Dulin's long jump of 22' 5" moves him into a tie for third on the Pioneers' all-time list in the event. Dulin is also now tied for fourth on Malone's list in the 55-meter hurdles at 7.71 seconds and is eighth all-time in the 400 at 50.67 seconds.
Brashears also turned in an exceptional individual effort on Saturday. He earned a spot at the top of the podium in the triple jump as he placed first with a new meet record of 43' 11.25". The impressive distance was the second-longest triple jump in Pioneer indoor history, second only to Donald Bunker's 1982 school record of 48' 3".
In addition to his triple jump performance, Brashears also took second in the long jump with a new personal record of 21' 8". He then posted the third-fastest 55-meter dash time in school history, placing third in 6.52 seconds.
Taylor won the shot put with a new meet record of 47' 5.25". The impressive mark pushes Taylor up to eighth on the Pioneers' all-time list in the event. Although he did not register a weight-throw mark on Saturday due to fouling on his first three attempts, Taylor has put together a remarkable indoor season to this point, having claimed six G-MAC Field Athlete of the Week Awards. He has also broken the conference weight throw record five times and the Malone school record three times in the just the past three months.
For the Pioneer women, freshman
Olga Branney earned the G-MAC high jump title, establishing a new meet record with a leap of 5' 5".
George McCartney won the 3000 meters in 9:00.97 and also finished runner-up in the men's 5000 meters with a time of 15:20.16.
Austin Cary, an NCAA Division II Academic All-American for the Pioneer football team, claimed the G-MAC Title in the weight throw, smashing the previous meet record with a toss of 49' 7". With the strong showing, Cary climbed to fifth on Malone's all-time performance list.
Logan Studer brought home the G-MAC Championship in the men's pole vault with a mark of 14' 3.25".
Erika Rector earned a runner-up finish in the 800 meters in 2:18.47. She also took over the No. 3 position on Malone's all-time performance list in the one-mile run, placing third in 5:07.63.
Jankowski also accounted for plenty of important points as he took second in the 3000 meters (9:06.30), fifth in the mile (4:25.55), and fifth in the 800 meters (1:59.17).
Additional Men's Highlights
In the high jump,
Evan Main placed second (6' 0.75"),
Joshua Woika was fifth (6' 0.75"), and
Joshua Easley finished in a tie for eighth (5' 8.75").
On top of Dulin's winning performance in the 55-meter hurdles, three other Pioneers scored points. Brown moved into the No. 8 position all-time at Malone after placing third in 7.92 seconds. Easley was fourth in 8.03 seconds and Main took eighth in 8.74 seconds.
On top of Cary's performance in the weight throw,
Chad Sanner,
Camden Baucke,
Tyler Bowman and
Colton Hale all registered points in the event. Sanner climbed to eighth on the Pioneers' all-time performance list after placing fourth with a toss of 46' 4". Baucke took over the tenth position on Malone's all-time list in the weight throw after placing fifth with a mark of 44' 7". Bowman was sixth in 43' 7" and Hale took eighth in 42' 5.5".
Bowman, Baucke,
Jonathon Zimmerly and Hale - each members of the Malone Football team – also scored points for the Pioneers in the shot put. Bowman was fourth (43' 7.75"), Baucke fifth (43' 6.5"), Zimmerly sixth (42' 7") and Hale seventh (40' 10.5").
The Pioneers' distance medley relay team of Harroun,
Daveon Howard,
Daniel Carmany and
Noah Whittington finished runner-up in 10:53.61.
In the 3000 meters,
Brett Cortelletti was fourth (9:08.96) and Whittington took sixth (9:12.19).
On top of his 3000-meter performance, Cortelletti was also fifth in the 5000 meters in 15:42.95.
In the men's mile,
Lorne Strausbaugh was seventh (4:29.99).
Woika turned in a sixth-place showing the triple jump with a distance of 39' 7.25".
Additional Women's Highlights
The Pioneers' 4 x 400-meter relay team of
Katie Grimes,
Maggie Poorman,
Rebekah Carr and Rector placed second in 4:00.49.
In the long jump,
Jaylyn Vance finished runner-up with a leap of 17' 7.5".
Emily Luli followed in sixth (16' 5") and
Taryn Chapman was seventh (15' 9.75").
Michelia Tanner earned third-place finishes in both the weight throw competition and the shot put. Tanner's weight throw mark of 46' 11" and her shot put tally of 38' 10.5" were both personal bests. She now has sole possession of the No. 5 spot on Malone's all-time performance list in the weight throw and is seventh in the shot put.
In the 400-meter dash, Carr posted a new personal-record, placing third in 59.48 seconds. Grimes was right behind in fourth at 1:00.27 and
Elisha Cooper was sixth in 1:02.31.
In the finals of the 55-meter hurdles,
Mary Briceland took third in 9.14 seconds,
Madelynn McDermott was fourth in 9.31 seconds and
Paige Svendsen was sixth in 9.63 seconds.
Luli and Vance both scored points in the triple jump as Luli placed third in 33' 4.75" while Vance was fifth in 32' 9.75".
In the high jump competition, Chapman took third with a mark of 5' 1" while Briceland tied for seventh with a leap of 4' 9".
In the 5000 meters,
Hannah Thompson placed third (17:58.65),
Hannah Campbell was fifth (18:21.08),
Laura Tweedie placed sixth (18:37.08) and
Erin Moomaw took seventh (18:42.63).
Thompson and
Jade Smith also tallied points in the 3000 meters. Thompson placed fourth in 10:28.36 and Smith was right behind in fifth at 10:28.46.
The distance medley relay team of
Makayla Mohre,
Ashley Krieger,
Emily O'Dell and
Rachel Wentworth took fourth in 13:08.79.
The Pioneers pocketed a total of nine points in the 200 meters as Cooper placed fifth (26.84), Poorman was sixth (26.96) and Krieger took seventh (26.99). Cooper's time gives her the No. 10 position on Malone's all-time list in the event.
In the 800 meters, Luli placed sixth in 2:26.48 and Grimes was eighth in 2:27.47.
Smith also took sixth in the one-mile run with a mark of 5:14.65.
In the pole vault, Luli earned a sixth-place finish (7" 6.50"),
Alex Dutton, who also competes for the Pioneer swimming & diving team, was seventh (7' 6.50") and
Amber Murphy was eighth (7' 0.50").

The Pioneers' NCAA DII provisional qualifiers will now wait to see if their marks will earn them an invitation to the DII National Championships that will be held March 10-11 in Birmingham, Alabama.
