Volleyball Closes Regular Season at Ursuline and Lake Erie

Veronica Gehring had a season-high 17 kills against Lake Erie earlier this season

The Malone University volleyball team will wrap up regular season play this weekend with road contests at Ursuline College on Friday, November 10th at 7:00 pm and Lake Erie College on Saturday, November 11th at 11:00 am. Malone enters the weekend with a 17-11 overall record and a 11-5 mark in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Pioneers have already clinched a spot in the G-MAC Championship Tournament and will now be jockeying for seeding as they could potentially see themselves in a three-way tie atop of the G-MAC East Division.

Malone Notes 
  • The Pioneers captured three straight victories over Davis & Elkins, Ohio Valley, and Alderson Broaddus last week in which they out-hit their opponents .262 to .104.
  • Veronica Gehring hit .364 with a team-high 31 kills across the three matches. On the season, she leads the team in kills (2.67/s) and is 2nd in attack percentage (.214). Gehring posted season-highs in kills (17) and digs (8) when Malone faced Lake Erie earlier this season.
  • Hannah Eliason posted a .390 attacking percentage with 20 kills in the three matches, including a career-high 12 kills on Saturday against Alderson Broaddus. She led the team with nine blocks.
  • Mallory Adams collected eight blocks along with 28 kills on the weekend. Adams who, ranks second in the G-MAC with 1.02 blocks per set, moved into the 9th on Malone's all-time blocks list last weekend with 284 in her career.
  • Maggie Hamrock reached her own career milestone last weekend, surpassing 1,000 career digs. Hamrock is 9th in the G-MAC with 3.82 digs per set.
  • While Hamrock collected a team-high 39 digs over the three matches, Faith Lau totaled 34 digs in addition to her 27 kills. Lau has at least nine digs in each of her last four matches.
  • Defensive specialist Sydney Black finished third on the team with 22 digs in the backrow last weekend while middle hitter Brooklyn Sullivan made her presence felt up front, totaling 12 kills on just 26 attacks.
  • Setters Elizabeth Selleny (47), Abbie Swaino (42), and Cathryn Miller (21) combined for 110 assists. Malone enters the weekend ranked 6th in the G-MAC with 10.78 assists per set.
  • The Pioneers are also 6th in the conference in kills (11.61/s) and hitting percentage (.178). Malone ranks 3rd in opponents' hitting percentage (.166), blocks (1.98/s), and digs (16.32/s).
  • Ursuline and Lake Erie combined to hit just .100 against Malone in September. The Pioneers tallied 39 kills, the second most in a three-set match this season, in a sweep of Ursuline. They scooped up 84 digs against Lake Erie.

Ursuline Notes - Roster | Schedule | Stats
  • After going 2-4 over their last six matches, all on the road, the Arrows return home for the first time since mid-October. Ursuline is 8-19 overall this season and 3-13 in conference. They are coming off of three-set loss to Lake Erie last Saturday.
  • Victoria Henderson leads the team and is 4th in the G-MAC with 3.38 kills per set. Setter Katelyn Selleny, older sister of Elizabeth, is 6th in assists (7.00/s), while libero Zoe Skinner is 6th in digs (4.31/s).
  • As a team, the Arrows are 5th in digs and 6th in aces. They do, however, give up the 3rd-most aces in the conference. Malone aced the Arrows 10 times in three sets in their first meeting.
     
Lake Erie Notes - Roster | Schedule | Stats
  • Since losing to Malone in late September, the Storm are 11-3 in their last 14 matches. They enter the weekend 23-8 overall and 13-3 in the G-MAC where they maintain the #1 seed in the East Division.
  • Lake Erie ranks 1st in the G-MAC in digs (17.39/s), 2nd in kills (12.82/s), 3rd in hitting (.223), and 4th in both blocks (1.91/s) and opponents' hitting percentage (.167).
  • Bethany Fisher is 2nd is the conference in kills (3.84/s) while Brooke Peiffer is 8th (3.07 k/s). The pair each recorded 13 kills in the loss to Malone.
  • Libero Sidney Fletcher is 2nd in the G-MAC in aces (46) and is 3rd in digs (4.91/s).
