Pioneers Swept by Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday

OWENSBORO, Ky. -- The Malone University baseball team returned to Kentucky Wesleyan College on Saturday to wrap up a weekend Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) series with the Panthers.

Kentucky Wesleyan (15-21, 13-7) broke a late tie in the fist game to squeak past Malone (13-23, 4-15 G-MAC) by a final score of 3-2.

Then the Panthers scored four runs in the final three innings of the second game to complete the series sweep with a 9-5 win.

Game 1 Highlights
KWC opened up the scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning.

Starting pitcher Nate Plack really settled in after surrendering the long ball, and held the Panther bats in check for much of the rest of the game.

In the top of the fourth inning Malone loaded the bases on a Jake Aleman leadoff single and back-to-back walks by JT Tonelli and Boston Black

Evan Swan came through with a sacrifice fly to score Aleman, and then a two-out base knock by Tyson Gingerich brought home Tonelli to tie the game at 2-2.

Unfortunately the Pioneer offense hit a wall the rest of the game.

In the bottom of the sixth KWC broke the tie with a RBI single.

The Panthers then worked around a MU single in the top of the seventh to hang out for the 3-2 win.

Game 2 Highlights
The teams traded runs in the second inning, but then Kentucky Wesleyan went ahead 4-1 after plating two runs in the third and one in the fourth.

Malone rallied back with two of their own in the top of the fifth.

Cameron Martin's RBI scored Clayton Criss, and Evan Swan scored on a wild pitch to bring MU to within one run at 4-3.

Unfortunately the Panthers got one of those runs back in their half of the inning.

RBIs by both Martin and Jake Aleman in the seventh tied the game at 5-5, but KWC scored the final four runs of the game to complete the series sweep with a 9-5 win.

PIONEER POINTS
  • Jake Aleman was 4-7 at the plate on the day. He scored two runs, and also had a stolen base.
  • By going 3-8 in the doubleheader Tyson Gingerich moved his season batting average to .364. He continues to lead Malone in numerous offensive categories.
  • Four Pioneer pitchers combined for nine strikeouts on the day. Nate Plack led the way with four punchouts.
