CANTON -- Malone University stepped outside of conference play for the final time in the 2022 regular season on Wednesday. The Pioneers hosted Notre Dame College at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium.
The Falcons (19-19, 13-7 MEC) scored six runs in the top of the first inning, and then held off a furious comeback attempt by the Pioneers (13-24, 4-15 G-MAC) to pick up the 9-6 win.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Notre Dame's offense exploded for six runs on seven hits in the top of the first inning. The Falcons sent eleven men to the plate in the inning, and grabbed the early 6-0 lead.
The Pioneer pitching staff settled in after the big inning to give MU a chance to get back into the game.
Malone got on the board for the first time in the bottom of the third when
Tyson Gingerich doubled home
Andrew Hanna.
Unfortunately, the Falcons answered with an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth inning Malone's offense went to work on chipping away at the 7-1 deficit.
With two runners on and no outs in the inning
Evan Swan singled to center to score
Boston Black. In the very next at bat
Clayton Criss scored on a throwing error by the NDC catcher to make it 7-3.
Later in the inning Gingerich came through with a sacrifice fly to allow Swan to score Malone's fourth run of the game.
In the sixth inning Criss executed a perfect squeeze bunt play to bring home
JC Philippi.
Malone pulled even closer in the seventh inning when
JT Tonelli singled home Gingerich to make it a 7-6 game.
The Pioneers loaded the bases in the eighth inning, but could not break through for the tying run.
Notre Dame added two runs to their tally in the top of the ninth, and Malone could not answer in the final at bat of the game.

Malone travels to Lake Erie College this weekend for a four-game Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) series.
The series begins with a doubleheader on Friday at 12:00 p.m.
