AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Malone University baseball team continued their spring break trip on Friday with two more games.
The Pioneers (8-7, 0-0 G-MAC) lost a 15-14 slugfest to D'Youville College (5-3, 0-0 ECC) in the opener.
Malone then turned around and picked up a 6-0 win over the University of Sioux Falls (6-6, 0-0 NSIC) in a game that was resumed after a weather delay yesterday afternoon.
Game 1 vs D'Youville College Highlights
Things looked bleak for the Pioneers early on as the Saints scored the first nine runs of the game unanswered.
Trailing 9-0 heading into the fourth inning, Malone's offense started to come alive.
Eric Baum drew a bases loaded walk to bring home the Pioneers first run of the ballgame. In the very next at bat
Andrew Hanna came through with a sacrifice fly to score
Evan Balzano and make it 9-2.
After
Bryce Layton pitched back-to-back scoreless innings, MU really came alive in the top of the sixth inning.
After the Pioneers loaded the bases,
JT Tonelli was hit by a pitch which allowed
Clayton Criss to score.
Jake Aleman followed by drawing a walk to bring home Hanna and make it 9-4.
D'Youville went to the bullpen for a new arm, but it was still the same result.
Cameron Martin reached on a walk.
Tyson Gingerich scored on the play to inch Malone closer.
In the very next at bat
JC Philippi came through with a clutch two-RBI single to bring the Pioneers within just two runs at 9-7.
Layton and the defense put another zero up on the board in the bottom half of the inning, and Tonelli doubled home Gingerich in the top of the seventh to make it a 9-8 game.
Unfortunately D'Youville responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh.
JC Philippi scored on a wild pitch in the eighth, but then the Saints scored three runs in their half of the inning to take a 14-9 lead.
Down to their last three outs Malone continued to fight.
Philippi and Balzano had back-to-back two-RBI doubles in the top of the ninth.
Clayton Criss came through with a clutch sacrifice fly to bring home
Petey Taylor and tie the game at 14-14.
Playing as the home team on the scoreboard proved to be beneficial for D'Youville however.
The Saints got a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to claim the 15-14 win.
Game 2 vs University of Sioux Falls Highlights
The game was resumed with the Pioneers leading 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Before weather forced the game to be halted yesterday, Malone had scored four runs in the top of the fourth.
Evan Balzano laced a RBI single, and then
Tyson Gingerich cleared the bases with a three-RBI triple to put MU up 4-0.
Starting pitcher
Mitch Maurer was also nearly unhittable. His line from yesterday was 3.2 innings pitched with four strikeouts.
Today Tyson Jackson took over on the mound, and picked up right where Maurer left off. He finished the final 3.1 innings, and allowed just one hit to keep the Cougars scoreless.
Malone's offense added a run in the fifth, and then
Cameron Martin hit his second homerun of the season in the sixth to put the Pioneers up 6-0.
Jackson sat Sioux Falls down in order in the seventh to complete the win.
