Pioneers Head North for Midweek Affair

Naomi Grandison matched a career-high with 18 points against Northwood last season.

The Malone University women's basketball team travels to Midland, Michigan this Wednesday, December 19th to meet Northwood University in a non-conference matchup at 1:00 pm. Wednesday's Midwest Region matchup will be the fifth straight road game for the Pioneers, who have lost four of their last five games overall.

Series History
Malone is 2-4 in six all-time games against Northwood, including an 0-2 mark in road games. The Timberwolves and Pioneers played every December from 2011-15, then again last November in Canton where Northwood defeated Malone 71-61 in Malone's home opener.

  • Senior forward Naomi Grandison matched a career-high with 18 points in the loss to Northwood last season. This year, she is averaging 7.5 points per game and has reached double digits four times.
  • Freshman Robin Campbell leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.4 ppg. The first-year point guard also leads the team in assists (35) and ranks third in the Region in minutes (36.3 mpg). She played all 40 minutes and scored 14 points in Malone's 60-55 loss to Kentucky Wesleyan this past Saturday.
  • In a 54-46 win over Trevecca Nazarene two days prior, Chrissie Vaughan, Sydney Wentling, and Ellen Doyle each scored nine points as the Pioneers allowed a season-low 46 points and held the Trojans to just 27.5% shooting.
  • On the year, Malone ranks fifth in the Midwest Region in field goal percentage defense and eighth in scoring defense.Offensively, the Pioneers are second in the Midwest and sixth in DII in three-pointers attempted (301) and make close to eight per game.
  • Chrissie Vaughan, a senior guard, leads the team with 19 three-pointers, including at least one each in all 11 games this season and 16 straight overall dating back to last season.
  • Vaughan, who recently surpassed head coach Selana Reale for 28th on the Pioneer's all-time scoring list, is averaging 8.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game this year. She also leads the team with 11 steals and five blocked shots.
  • Junior forward Ellen Doyle is averaging 8.2 points and a team-high 6.1 rebounds. The Michigan native also leads the team in shooting (40.5%).
  • Junior guard Sydney Wentling has been the primary offensive spark off the bench for the Pioneers, tossing in 7.5 points a night.
  • Malone is 3-3 on the road this season.
  • Over their last 14 games played in Michigan, the Pioneers are just 2-12, with both wins coming at Lake Superior State (2014 & 2017). Outside of those wins, Malone's last victory in Michigan came in the 2014 GLIAC Semifinal when Reale led Malone to an upset of top-seeded Wayne State.

  • The Timberwolves, members of the GLIAC, are coming off a 69-47 win over Lake Superior State in their most recent game on December 8th. Their other wins include a 65-53 win at Ursuline and a season-opening win over nationally-ranked Southern Indiana.
  • Northwood relies heavily on its starting lineup as all five starters are averaging over 30 minutes per game. Sophomore guard Ellie Taylor leads the team in scoring (12.8 ppg) while senior center Grace German (9.8 ppg) pulls down a team-high 8.8 rebounds a night.
  • As a team, however, Northwood is bottom-10 in DII in both rebounds per game and field goal defense. Offensively, the Timberwolves like to shoot the three, tossing up close to 25 per contest.
