Pioneers Secure Senior Day Sweep of Ohio Valley

In the final regular season match of the season, the Malone University volleyball team defeated Ohio Valley University 25-15, 25-23, 25-21 Saturday afternoon in Osborne Hall. With the win, the Pioneers improved to 16-15 on the season and 12-7 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Fighting Scots dropped to 9-19 on the year and 4-15 in the G-MAC.
 
Prior to Saturday's match, the 2018 senior class of Veronica Gehring, Maggie Hamrock, Cathryn Miller, and Mallory Adams were celebrated with a Senior Day ceremony. In between the second and third sets, the seniors had the opportunity to recognize their most influential professors. Dr. David Beer, Dr. Pamela Hoalt, Professor Tanya Hershberger, and Dr. David Calderhead were all honored.

Backed by five first-set kills by Mallory Adams, the Pioneers pulled away from a narrow 11-9 lead in the opener with a 5-0 run and then closed on a 6-2 run to win the set 25-15. In the second, Malone overcame 16 errors and an 11-2 Ohio Valley run to earn the victory. Down 21-17, the Pioneers fought back and won using an 8-2 rally.
 
Clinging to a thin 20-19 lead in the third set, Malone won five of the final seven points to claim the three-set victory. The Pioneers tallied four service aces in the final set and a season-high 12 altogether. Malone had 12 service aces in the previous five matches combined.
 
Freshman defensive specialist Abby Hasebein led the Pioneers with four aces while Mallory Adams and Faith Lau followed with three apiece. Setter Elizabeth Selleny and defensive specialist Sydney Black each chipped in with aces.
 
Adams led the Malone attack with nine kills on just 18 swings. Hannah Eliason provided seven kills on 14 total attacks. Playing in their final collegiate home match, Veronica Gehring contributed six kills and Cathryn Miller totaled 10 assists. Selleny handed out 11 assists.
 
Senior libero Maggie Hamrock recorded a match-high 15 digs to lead the defensive efforts. Miller, Adams, and Eliason each registered four blocks.

Malone will visit Findlay next Tuesday, November 6th for a G-MAC Championship Quarterfinal match.
