Volleyball To Host Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day At Saturday's Match

Preview article for Friday and Saturday's matches

This Saturday, the Malone University volleyball team will host a Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day to honor those educators who have made a lasting impact on the Pioneer senior class.

Each faculty or staff member was chosen by a Malone senior volleyball player due to the difference that the educator has made in the student-athlete's life both inside and outside of the classroom.

The recognition will take place between the second and third set of Saturday's 2:00 p.m. home match against Ohio Valley University.

Senior setter Cathryn Miller selected Dr. David Beer, associate professor of Political Science. Dr. Beer has been at Malone since 2012 and also serves as the associate director of the Center for Christian Faith and Culture.

Cathryn wrote to Dr. Beer, "I just wanted to say thank you and let you know that I appreciate everything you have done for me. Everyday you made class fun and enjoyable. I want to thank you for your passion for teaching and always leaving your door open. Most of all, thank you for pushing me and teaching me to think for myself. Thank you for all that you have done for me!"

Senior outside hitter Veronica Gehring selected Dr. Pamela Hoalt, professor of community & public health.

"Doctors Ken and Pam Hoalt have been a vital part of my education at Malone University," commented Veronica.  "They have guided me not only in health behavior classes for these past years, but also in life in general. Thank you both for being the most incredible professors and people. Thank you for your patience, passion about your work and unconditional support. Thank you for your ability to boost my interest in things I never even imagined, and for simply inspiring me in all that you do."

Senior middle hitter Mallory Adams chose Tanya Hershberger, professor of outdoor education and GEN 100. In addition to her teaching duties, Tanya also works in the office of Spiritual Formation.

"Tanya and I met during my freshman college experience class and since that time, she's become a very special person in my life," commented Mallory. "Tanya is our mentor for the volleyball team and she has become more than just a professor; she is a Godly woman who's example is an inspiration to me. Thank you for your time and energy in teaching me so much about life and faith and challenging me to grow in these areas. Your friendship to me is something that I will never forget."

Senior libero Maggie Hamrock selected Dr. Kyle Calderhead, professor of mathematics. Dr. Calderhead has been at Malone for 12 years and currently serves as a professor of mathematics.

Maggie wrote to Dr. Calderhead, "Your role as a professor of mathematics has been influential to me throughout my time at Malone. You have always gone the extra mile in helping me be successful in your courses and in preparation for after graduation. You have given me career guidance, plenty of life advice and several great math jokes. You and your family have shown great hospitality to myself and the math club and have helped build a great sense of community within the math department. I am grateful for Dr. Calderhead and of your support throughout the past four years."

In addition to honoring the Faculty and Staff members, the volleyball team will also celebrate Senior Day during Saturday's contest as Miller, Gehring, Adams and Hamrock will be recognized with their families prior to the start of the match.
