Malone to Visit Salem for pre-Thanksgiving Road Trip

Naomi Grandison scored a game-high 14 points the last time Malone and Salem met two seasons ago.

The Malone­­­ University women's basketball team continues its non-conference schedule this week with a Wednesday, November 21st road trip to Salem University (formerly Salem International) and a 3:00 pm tipoff. The Pioneers, who enter the contest at 1-3 on the season, begin Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play at home next Thursday.

Series History
The Pioneers hold a 7-4 all-time record against Salem. The two teams last met two years ago when Malone won both ends of a home-and-home 77-39 and 84-43.

Malone Notes
  • The Pioneers are coming off a 1-1 week which included a 65-52 win over Notre Dame (OH) on Wednesday and a 64-53 loss to Seton Hill on Saturday.
  • In the loss to Seton Hill, Malone led 53-52 midway through the fourth quarter, but was outscored 12-0 over the final five minutes. Against Notre Dame, Malone held the Falcons to just 33.3% shooting and knocked down 11 three-pointers.
  • Through four games this season, the Pioneers have made 34 three-pointers, which ranks among the top-30 in Division II. Malone is also top-15 in DII in free-throw shooting (80.6%).
  • The Pioneer defense is last in the country in steals and next to last in forced turnovers, but is holding opponents to 37.1% shooting and just 59.8 points per game.
  • Freshman guard Robin Campbell leads the team in scoring (17.5 ppg) and assists (13).
  • Senior guard Chrissie Vaughan (9.3 ppg) leads the team in three-pointers (9). She scored a team-high 16 points vs. Seton Hill.
  • Junior forward Ellen Doyle (6.5 ppg) leads the team in rebounding (6.8 rpg). She pulled down a career-high 13 boards last Saturday.
  • Against Notre Dame, Sydney Wentling scored a team-high 17 points, two shy of matching a career-high.
  • Since the beginning of the 2016-17 season, Malone is 7-1 in games played in West Virginia.
     
Salem Notes 
  • The Tigers enter the contest 0-4, but they rank fourth in Division II in offensive rebounds per game (21.0) and sixth in DII in made threes per game (10.8). The Salem defense, however, is allowing nearly 85 points per game and opponents are shooting 43.2%.
  • Junior guard Alicia Smith is scoring a team-high 15.8 points per game. Endia Jones, a 6'3" junior forward is scoring 8.5 points a game and collecting a team-high 7.0 rebounds.
