Pioneers Host Home Opener On Saturday Against Kentucky State

Daylan Haynie has dished out 14 assists through the Pioneers' first two games. The junior guard tallied 22 points in last year's meeting with Kentucky State

The Malone University men's basketball team will open up the home portion of its 2018-19 schedule on Saturday at Osborne Hall with a 4:00 pm non-conference contest against Kentucky State University.

Series History
Malone is 2-0 all-time against the Thorobreds.  Malone and KSU first met at the NAIA National Tournament in 1975 – a game the Pioneers won by a final score of 85-77.  A stretch of over 40 years would pass until last season when Malone picked up a 99-85 road victory in the second all-time meeting.  The Pioneers went 28-of-30 from the line in the 2017 contest and former Pioneer standout Ty Jordan racked up 35 points.  Current Pioneer Daylan Haynie also had a big game against Kentucky State last year, notching 22 points.
 
Malone Notes
-The Pioneers dropped a pair of games at the season-opening G-MAC/GLVC Crossover last weekend.  Malone fell 81-70 to host University of Illinois Springfield and 74-71 to the University of Southern Indiana
-Malone hit double-digit three-pointers in seven out of its final eight games in 2017-18 and the squad continued that trend during its opening weekend.  The Pioneers hit 11 treys against Illinois Springfield before knocking down 14 attempts from beyond the arc in the narrow defeat to USI
-Overall the Pioneers are shooting 39.1% from downtown this year.  The squad went 13 of 14 at the foul line on Friday night but struggled mightily at the stripe on Saturday, hitting only 11 of 25 free throws
-Guard Nate Sheppard was named to the G-MAC/GLVC Crossover All-Tournament Team after averaging 23.5 points, five rebounds and two assists in Malone's first two games.  The senior has hit 10 of 22 three-pointers so far this year and is averaging over 36 minutes per game
-Forward Ben Evans's senior season is off to a strong start.  He racked up a career-high 22 points in Friday's contest before tossing in 14 on Saturday.  Through his first two games, Evans is averaging 18 points and 5.5 rebounds and has drained seven three-pointers
-Sophomore guard Jaret Majestic has also been dangerous from beyond the arc, having made six of 15 trifectas.  Majestic drilled five of his three-pointers on Saturday on his way to a total of 19 points.
-Haynie tossed in 13 points and dished out four assists on Friday.  He then handed out 10 assists on Saturday.  Through his first two games, the junior point guard is averaging 7.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and seven assists
 
Kentucky State Notes - Roster | Statistics
-The Thorobreds are members of NCAA Division II and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Confernce.  The University is located in Frankfurt, Kentucky
-Kentucky State is currently 1-1 on the season.  The Thorobreds lost 85-63 at Kentucky Wesleyan College this past Saturday but then bounced back with a 73-65 home win over Wilberforce University on Tuesday
-Kentucky State has committed an average of 18.5 turnovers through its first two games while shooting 43% from the field and just 28% from beyond the arc.  The Thorobreds have forced 16.5 turnovers per game
-6'7" forward Kevin Hayes is averaging a team-best 22.5 points through KSU's first two games
-Guard Ditalion Battle has tossed in 10 points and five rebounds per game
-Forward Austin Sherrill posted 12 points, six rebounds, five blocks, and three steals in the win against Wilberforce
-6'8" forward David Jelks paces the squad in rebounding at 7.0 boards per contest
