Pioneers Pick Up Road Victory with Sweep of Davis & Elkins

The Malone University volleyball team improved to 10-3 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) with a 25-19, 25-15, 25-19 win over Davis & Elkins College Friday evening in Elkins, West Virginia. The win snapped a three-match losing skid for the Pioneers, who are now 14-11 overall on the season.
 
Recap
The opening set played much closer than the score indicated as both teams posted identical .119 hitting percentages. The Pioneers got the better of the Senators, however, pulling away from a 20-19 tally with a set-clinching 5-0 rally that featured two of Faith Lau's five first-set kills.  In the second set, Malone held D&E to just five kills and closed out the frame on a 16-7 run. Lau and Veronica Gehring teamed up for eight of the team's 13 kills in the frame.
 
In the third, the Pioneers saw themselves down by two points, 4-6, early on, but again fought back with a 9-2 rally. The Senators briefly closed to within two points, but Malone separated for the three-set victory.
 
Faith Lau finished with a match-high 13 kills to go along with 10 digs en route to achieving her third double-double of the season. Mallory Adams added eight kills, Veronica Gehring seven, Hannah Eliason six, and Rachel Santos five as the five-pronged attack tallied 40 kills in the three-setter. Setter Cathryn Miller totaled 34 assists. Miller, Adams, and Lau each collected a pair of service aces.
 
Defensively, Adams and Gehring each recorded four blocks while Eliason ended the match with three. Libero Maggie Hamrock collected a match-high 16 digs, Sydney Black added nine, and Miller and Abby Hasebein chipped in with eight apiece.
 
Up Next
Malone will look to make it two straight wins on Saturday when they visit Alderson Broaddus for a 12:00 pm matchup.
