The Malone University track & field teams made a strong debut at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship Meet at Cedarville University on Friday afternoon.
Pioneer student-athletes broke a total of eight meet records on day one before weather conditions halted the competition, forcing several field events that were scheduled for Friday to be postponed until Saturday.
With five events scored, the Malone men are in first-place with 82 points. Cedarville is second with 56 and Trevecca Nazarene University is third with 21 points. Through four completed events on the women's side, Cedarville is first with 65 points, Malone is second with 40 points and Kentucky Wesleyan College is third with 25 points.
Ashton Dulin, who was named the G-MAC Men's Track Athlete of the Year during the indoor season, turned in another incredible performance on Friday. The sophomore, a starting wide receiver on the Pioneer football team, surpassed four meet records on the day, topping the previous G-MAC Championship marks in the long jump, the prelims of the 110-meter hurdles, the prelims of the 100-meter dash and the prelims of the 200-meter dash.
Dulin captured the conference's outdoor long jump title on Friday and moved up to seventh on Malone's all-time performance list with a new G-MAC record of 23' 2.75". He won his 110-meter hurdles preliminary heat with a meet record of 14.90 seconds, tied Kentucky Wesleyan College's James Glenn in the prelims of the 100-meter dash with a mark of 10.67 seconds, and won his 200-meter prelim heat in 22.08 seconds.
In the 3000-meter steeplechase, sophomore
Hannah Thompson broke both the G-MAC's Championship Meet record and the conference's all-time record with a winning time of 11:05.23. The strong showing was just shy of the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard and it moves Thompson up to sixth on Malone's all-time performance list in the event.
Junior
Jade Smith also surpassed the G-MAC's previous Championship Meet record in the steeplechase. Her time of 11:11.22 was good for a third-place finish on Friday and ranks eighth on the Pioneers' all-time list.
Duke Taylor won the hammer throw competition, smashing the previous meet record by nearly 15 meters. His toss of 181' 11" (55.44 meters) was one of his best throws of the season and surpassed the second-place finisher by over 18 feet.
Hannah Campbell and
Laura Tweedie both eclipsed the previous meet record in the 10,000 meters. Campbell took second in 38:17.61 and Tweedie was fourth in 38:40.29.
Brett Cortelletti topped the previous meet record in the 10,000 meters after placing second with a time of 32:15.38.

Additional Men's Highlights
In the 3000-meter steeplechase,
George McCartney earned a second-place finish in 9:36.60 while
Aaron Schaller placed fifth in 10:06.09. and
Ezekiel Neihart was seventh in 10:24.38.
On top of Taylor's impressive showing in the hammer throw, three other Pioneers scored points in the event.Â
Camden Baucke grabbed the No. 10 spot on Malone's all-time performance list after placing fourth on Friday with a heave of 143' 8".Â
Austin Cary was fifth at 139' 6" and
Chad Sanner was sixth with a mark of 135' 8".
In the shot put, Taylor placed second with a toss of 46' 0.5". Baucke was third at 45' 5.75",
Jonathon Zimmerly was fifth at 44' 6.25",
Tyler Bowman earned a sixth-place finish at 43' 10.75" and
Clay Wodicka palced eighth at 41' 3.75".
Freshman
Ja'Vonne Brashears placed third in the long jump with a mark of 21' 6.75" and will join Dulin in the finals of the 100-meter dash after he posted a preliminary time of 10.82 seconds.
In addition to Dulin,
Joshua Easley and
Daniel Brown also advanced to Saturday's finals in the 110-meter hurdles. Easley registered a time of 15.49 seconds while Brown notched a mark of 15.77 seconds.
Additional Women's Highlights
Michelia Tanner took fourth in the shot put with a toss of 37' 4.5".
Erin Moomaw joined Campbell and Tweedie on the podium in the 10,000 meters, placing fifth in 39:28.79.
Emily Luli finished seventh in the pole vault with a mark of 8' 0.5".
Kelsey Veldhuizen,
Madelynn McDermott and
Mary Briceland all advanced to the finals of the 100-meter hurdles. Veldhuizen won her heat in 15.76 seconds, McDermott clocked a time of 15.80 and Briceland was right behind in 15.97.
Elisha Cooper earned a spot in the finals of the 100-meter dash after clocking a time of 12.58 seconds in Friday's prelims.
The G-MAC Championships will continue with a full slate of events on Saturday.
