Cross Country Teams Earn Top 10 Finishes At Lewis Crossover

The Malone University men's and women's cross country teams each registered Top 10 performances on Saturday morning at Lewis University's Conference Crossover Meet.

In a field jam-packed with nationally-ranked competition, the Pioneer women placed ninth among 34 teams while the men took 10th among 31 squads.

The Malone women, ranked 22nd in the most recent NCAA Division II National Poll, totaled 313 points.  NCAA Division II No. 6 California Baptist University won the women's race with 51 points.  Grand Valley State University, the top-ranked team in Division II, was second with 66 points and the University of Alaska-Anchorage, listed among those receiving votes in the latest national rankings, was third with 126 points. 

In all, eight of the event's Top 10 women's teams were either ranked in the NCAA Division II Top 25 or listed among those receiving votes.  Malone defeated several national-ranked teams, including No. 17 Cedarville University, which placed 11th, and No. 8 the University of Southern Indiana, which placed 12th.

Jade Smith led the way for the Pioneers as she placed 11th among over 350 competitors with a time of 22:07.5 on the 6K course.  Hannah Thompson was next, placing 29th in 22:31.4.  Hannah Campbell took 64th with a mark of 23:16.9.  Rachel Wentworth followed with a time of 23:42.9 while Laura Tweedie posted a mark of 23:59.7.  Also competing for Malone was Rachel Koons (24:21.2), Jasmine Penrod (24:25.7), Allie Dalton (24:57.4), Clare Willett (25:04.5), and Maria Martin (25:13.7).

On the men's side, the Pioneers, ranked 25th in the latest national poll, tallied 298 points on their way to the 10th-place showing.  NCAA Div. II No. 3 Grand Valley State won the men's 8K race with 55 points.  No. 9 California Baptist was second with 121 points and No. 6 Southern Indiana was third with 150 points.

Just like in the women's race, eight of the Top 10 finishers on the men's side are either ranked in the NCAA Division II Top 25 or listed among those receiving votes in the national poll. The Malone men also defeated a nationally-ranked opponent, topping No. 15 Bellarmine University, which placed 12th.

George McCartney paced Malone, finishing 14th among over 350 student-athletes with a mark of 25:24.1.  Nate Boyer was next, taking 21st in 25:30.3.  Zach Fresenko earned a 64th-place finish in 26:04.8.  Brett Cortelletti crossed the finish line in 26:24.2 while Noah Whittington clocked a time of 26:50.8.  Also competing for Malone was Nick Chaplik (27:08.2), Lorne Strausbaugh (27:20.4), Noah Chaplik ( 27:23.3), Mike Jankowski (27:50.8), and Joey Coudriet (28:20.4).

The Pioneers will be back in action on October 21st as the squads compete at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championships in Nashville, Tennessee.
