Malone Nets Two Third-Place Finishes at Youngstown State

CANFIELD, Ohio – The Malone University men's and women's cross country programs made the short trip to the Gorby Family Course in Canfield, Ohio for the YSU Invitational #2 on Saturday. Malone took on several NCAA Division I programs, but held their own.
 
The women's team placed third behind the Bucknell University Bison is first and the host Youngstown State University Penguins. Youngstown State and Bucknell traded the top two spots in the men's race with the Pioneers third.
 
The Pioneer women were led by Kristin Yeager with a 13th-place finish. She ran a time of 19:14.71 in the 5K event. Jenna Cassidy was inside the top-20 as well at 19:41.65 (20th overall). Malone had back-to-back finishers in Rebekah Stoneman (20:00.38) and Rachel Whetstone (20:08.55) in 28th and 29th. The team's final scoring member was Olivia Szmania with a time of 20:43.37, good for 36th spot overall.
 
Wyatt Royster secured the top finish for the Pioneers in the men's 8k event with a time of 26:23.91. He was 13th overall. Alex Hill was 17th with a mark of 26:40.29 and Hayden Schmidt 20th at 26:55.98. Zavier Medina was just behind Schmidt in the 21st spot (26:58.41) and Xander Heil was 23rd (27:02.37).
 
The final tune-up before the postseason will be the Lewis Crossover held on October 11 in Romeoville, Illinois.
