The Malone University cross country teams each registered Top 3 showings at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship Meet that was held on Saturday at Percy Warner Park in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Pioneer men placed second overall among a 10-team field as the squad narrowly missed out on capturing the conference title, finishing runner-up by just one point to NCAA Division II No. 19 Walsh University. The Cavaliers tallied 35 points to Malone's 36 while Cedarville University took third with 81 points.
The Pioneer women, meanwhile, secured a third-place finish among 12 teams. Hillsdale College, the squad ranked 10th in the most recent Division II National Poll, captured the team title with 32 points. Division II No. 9 Walsh took second on the women's side with 51 points and Malone was third with 71 points.
Individually, Malone had five men and three women collect Great Midwest All-Conference accolades while
Zach Fresenko was named the G-MAC Men's Freshman of the Year. Fresenko's honor marked the second consecutive year that a Pioneer has received the Men's Freshman of the Year Award as
Mike Jankowski earned the distinction in 2016.

Nate Boyer,
George McCartney and Fresenko collected First Team All-Conference recognition for the Pioneer men. Boyer placed third overall after clocking a time of 25:27.8 on the 8K course. McCartney was fourth in 25:29.4 and Fresenko was seventh, registering the top time among freshmen at 25:44.9.
For the Malone women,
Jade Smith earned the First Team distinction, placing third in the 6K race with a mark of 21:27.6.
Hannah Thompson and
Hannah Campbell secured Second Team honors as Thompson placed eighth in 21:59.8 and Campbell was 13th in 22:22.4.
Second Team recognition on the men's side went to
Brett Cortelletti and
Noah Chaplik. Cortelletti placed 10th overall with a time of 25:52.8 while Chaplik was 12th in 25:54.4.
Other competitors finishing in the Top 7 for the Malone men included
Lorne Strausbaugh, who placed 21st in 26:27.4, and
Aaron Schaller, who took 22nd in 26:29.5.
For the Pioneer women,
Rachel Wentworth placed 22nd in 23:08.0,
Rachel Koons was 27th in 23:23.3,
Laura Tweedie was 32nd in 23:32.4 and
Jasmine Penrod was 34th in 23:39.0.
Both Malone squads will be back in action on November 4th as the teams travel to Cedarville to compete in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships.
