The Malone University indoor track & field teams travelled to the University of Findlay on Friday evening to take part in the Northwest Ohio Invitational.
A number of Pioneers put together impressive performances as one school record and two Great Midwest Athletic Conference marks were broken by Malone athletes. Senior
Duke Taylor broke his own school record and the G-MAC record in the weight throw with an impressive heave of 61' 1.5". Friday's toss surpassed the old Malone record of 59' 7.5" which Taylor had set in 2014 and it also improved upon his NCAA Division II National Championship provisional qualifying mark from earlier this season. Taylor has now broken the conference's weight throw record in three consecutive meets.
The other record-breakirg performance came from freshman
Olga Branney in her first collegiate competition. The Green High School graduate placed second in the high jump, surpassing the G-MAC record and earning the No. 4 position on the Pioneers' all-time performance list in the event with a leap of 5' 4.25".
Senior
Erika Rector won the 800-meter race among 22 competitors with a time of 2:22.96. Four other Pioneers tallied Top 10 finishes in the event as
Emily O'Dell placed third,
Katie Grimes was sixth,
Amber Murphy took eighth and
Melody Jordan was tenth.
Additional Men's Highlights
Ja'Vonne Brashears moved up to fifth on Pioneers' all-time list in the 60-meter dash after clocking a time of 7.09 in the preliminaries of the event. Brashears then earned a sixth-place finish in his semifinal heat with a time of 7.15 seconds.
Brashears also grabbed the No. 9 position on Malone's all-time indoor performance list in the long jump after placing seventh in Friday's competition with a leap of 21' 10.25"
Lorne Strausbaugh collected a fifth-place finish in the one-mile run with a time of 4:32.15.
Ashton Dulin placed seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 51.34 seconds.
In the 60-meter hurdles,
Joshua Easley and
Daniel Brown just missed out on advancing to the finals as Easley clocked a ninth-place preliminary time of 8.74 and Brown was right behind in tenth at 8.84.
Additional Women's Highlights
Rebekah Carr earned a fourth-place finish in the 400 meters with a mark of 1:00.90.
Taryn Chapman collected a sixth-place finish in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a mark of 9.68 seconds.
Jaylyn Vance took seventh in the long jump with a mark of 16' 3.75".
The Pioneers' 4 x 400-meter relay team of Grimes, Chapman, Carr and Rector placed second with a mark of 4:07.89.
