Baseball Preview Notes: Senior Day Highlights Four-Game Weekend Series with Tiffin

Third baseman Jon Crank, who recently became Malone's all-time leader in walks, will be one of 12 seniors honored on Sunday.

The Malone University baseball team will welcome Tiffin University for a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) doubleheaders this weekend at Jackson High School. Saturday, April 23rd's doubleheader, originally scheduled for 2:00 pm has been moved up to 1:30, while Sunday April 24th's twinbill will commence at 12:00 pm. On Sunday, Malone will honor legendary baseball coach Bob Starcher before presenting the annual Starcher Memorial Scholarships during pre-game festivities. The Pioneers will then honor their 12 graduating seniors during a Senior Day ceremony between games one and two.

Malone Notes:
  • Among the 12 graduating seniors who will be recognized on Sunday are catcher Matt Davis, infielders Derek Carmichael, Jon Crank, Richie Mast and Chad Neff, and outfielders Ryan Froman, Austin Pachan, and Daulton Ritter
  • Pitchers Joe Costello, Matt Litty, and Tyler Whitlatch will join Mr. Pioneer Stephen Hunt, the Pioneers' team manager and JV outfielder, in the Senior Day activities
  • Davis (.390, 4 HR, 26 RBI) ranks third in the GLIAC in hitting while Crank (.325) is top-10 in homers (9), RBI (35), and slugging percentage (.632)
  • Jon Crank recently surpassed Justin Shifflett (2008-11) as Malone's all-time leader in bases on balls...with two free passes at Walsh on Wednesday, Crank broke the previous record of 112 and now has 114 career walks
  • Junior outfielders Keanan Locke (.396, 6 HR, 26 RBI) and Brenden Wells (.379, 5 HR, 31 RBI) help pace an offense that ranks 4th in the conference in batting average (.318)...Locke is 4th in overall batting average and stolen bases (10) while Wells is 13th in hitting and 10th in OBP (.471)
  • Starting pitchers Braun Miller (4-0, 2.78 ERA) and Roscoe Blackburn (2-4, 4.67) are likely to take the hill on Saturday...Clyde Yoder (2-1, 3.77) is probable to return to the rotation for game one Sunday while Whitlatch (4-2, 3.89) is likely to see action this weekend
  • After allowing just one hit in 6.2 innings last Saturday at Saginaw, Braun Miller lowered his hits allowed per nine innings figure to 5.3...the 9th lowest rate in the nation
  • Despite starting 4-1 at home this season, the Pioneers are just 1-4 on their own turf in their last five contests
  • Malone is currently 4th in the GLIAC overall standings and hold a two-game advantage in the win column over Walsh for the vital 2nd spot in the GLIAC South

Tiffin Notes:
  • The Dragons are led by 2015 All-GLIAC First Teamer Nick Hueneburg...the senior third baseman is hitting .328 and ranks 2nd in the GLIAC in homeruns (10) and 4th in RBI (37)
  • Kyle Durham (.382, 2 HR, 16 RBI), Alec McCurry (.366, .455 OBP, 14 RBI), and Kurt Barbeau (.313, 1 HR, 17 RBI) are all bats to look out for this weekend...Durham is third in the GLIAC in OBP (.494)
  • Pitchers Tyler Nichols (2-6, 5.57 ERA) and Kyle Montell (1-2, 2.15 ERA) are among likely starts for the four games this weekend...Nichols earned a victory on the bump over the Pioneers last season...had he pitched in enough innings, Montell would be 2nd in the GLIAC in ERA
  • Tiffin is 3-5 in their last eight games...seven of those eight games have been decided by one run
