Baseball Preview Notes: Pioneers Travel to Michigan to Meet Saginaw Valley State

Braun Miller ranks 20th in the country in fewest hits allowed per nine innings

The Malone University baseball team will make its first of two trips to Michigan this weekend when the Pioneers travel to University Center to face Saginaw Valley State University for a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) doubleheaders. Both doubleheaders (Saturday, April 16th and Sunday, April 17th) will start at 12:00 pm.

Malone Notes: 
  • Rightfielder Brenden Wells (.394, 5 HR, 28 RBI) has been on a tear as of late going 25-for-48 (.521) in his last 13 games raising his robust average to the the 7th-best mark in the GLIAC...Wells is in the top-10 in the GLIAC in homeruns, RBI, on-base percentage (.478) and slugging percentage (.616) and currently holds a 10-game hitting streak
  • The GLIAC's 3rd leading hitter, Keanan Locke (.425, 5 HR, 21 RBI), continues to produce along with Richie Mast (.376, 1 HR 19 RBI) atop of the Malone lineup
  • Jon Crank (.342, 9 HR, 33 RBI) and Matt Davis (.385, 4 HR, 23 RBI) have been feasting in the heart of the order...Crank is currently 2nd in the GLIAC in both homers and RBI and 4th in slugging percentage(.676)...Davis is top-10 in average, OBP (.488) and slugging (.604)
  • Had he played in enough games to qualify, freshman catcher Matt Noel (.400) would rank 5th in the conference in hitting...in ten games since cracking the starting lineup, Noel is hitting .416 (15-36)
  • As a team, Malone leads the GLIAC in hitting (.338) and is second in slugging percentage (.483)
  • In 12 conference games, the Pioneer pitching staff is 5th in the GLIAC with a collective 5.01 ERA and are 3rd with a .265 batting average against
  • Freshman lefthander Braun Miller (3-0, 3.14 ERA) is limiting opponents to a .192 BAA and is 20th in NCAA DII in fewest hits allowed per nine innings (5.97)
  • Sophomore lefthander Roscoe Blackburn (2-4, 4.28 ERA) will be in search of his third win this weekend after his best performance of the season last weekend at Ohio Dominican...Blackburn tossed a seven-inning complete game victory, allowing one earned run, and striking out six while retiring the final 12 batters of the game in order

  • Brendan Harrison (.363, 3 HR, 20 RBI), Jordan Swiss (.351, 2 HR 19 RBI), and Garret Soule (.330, 5 HR, 31 RBI) lead an offense that averages 5.8 runs per contest
  • Soule is fifth in the conference in RBI and tops on the team in OBP (.451) while Rich Guglielmi, who has missed the last four games, has a team-high 6 homeruns
  • 2015 All-GLIAC Second Teamer Michael Ellenbest (4-2, 3.14 ERA) heads a pitching staff that has compiled a 5.15 ERA...the northeast Ohio native is 5th in the conference in ERA and 4th in strikeouts (42)
  • Cardinal reliever Andrew Tidwell (2-0, 2 saves) has thrown 12 scoreless innings for a perfect 0.00 ERA
  • SVSU is coming off a doubleheader sweep of Wayne State on Wednesday and are 3-1 at home
