Softball Sweeps Point Park in Non-Conference Action

The Malone University softball team recorded its third sweep of the season in a non-conference matchup at Point Park University (PA) Tuesday night. Malone took the first game by the final score of 3-2 and then took the second game, 6-3.

The Pioneers will be back in action on Tuesday, March 22nd as they travel to Alderson Broaddus University (WV) for a pair of non-conference games. The first game is set to start at 1:00 p.m.

Game One:
MU scored its first run of the game when Mikayla Fowler raced home off a Point Park error to give Malone the 1-0 lead in the top of the third frame.

Point Park answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning as Kim Corcoran singled to tie the game at 1-1.

Fowler would do it again in the top of the sixth frame as she generated the RBI single, allowing Caley Ritts to score and retake the lead at 2-1.

In the top of the fifth frame, pinch runner Rachel Williams would score off a RBI single from Ritts to give Malone a comfortable 3-1 lead.

Point Park would score off of a walk to cut the deficit to 3-2 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. However, Point Park was unable to manufacture the tying run as the next batter of the inning lifted a fly ball to second base, ending the inning and giving Malone the 3-2 victory.

Fowler went 2-for-4 at the plate, tallied one run scored and a RBI.

Ritts went 1-for-1 at the plate and recorded a RBI.

Pitcher Kari Hall tossed all seven innings and registered four strikeouts.

Game Two:
Senior catcher Emily Isla would notch her third double of the season in the top of the first inning to bring Fowler across the plate. Later in the inning, Isla would score a run of her own to give Malone the 2-0 advantage in the top of the first.

In the bottom of the first inning, Point Park would tally a run to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Right fielder Taylor Lauer generated the first double of her career in the top of the fourth inning, allowing pinch runner Williams to score, lifting Malone's lead to 3-1.

Point Park collected another run in the bottom of the fourth, making it a 3-2 ballgame.

The runs kept coming for Malone as they went on to score one run in the fifth and another in the seventh inning to increase their lead to 6-2 in the top of the seventh.

Point Park scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough as the Pioneers recorded their ninth victory of the season.

Allison Mercado went 2-for-4 at the plate, collected two RBI's, and a double.

Isla also went 2-for-4 at the plate, notched two runs scored, a RBI and a double.

Hall continues to impress in the circle. She tossed her second complete game of the day, improving her record to 8-3 on the season.  Hall also registered six strikeouts to bring her season total to 63.
