The Malone University softball team defeated Saginaw Valley State University (MI) 6-2 to grab their first win against the Cardinals in program history on Friday afternoon, but fell 11-3 in game two.
Malone will continue conference play tomorrow (Saturday) as they welcome Wayne State University (MI) to Pioneer field. Game one is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
Game One:Kennedy Johnson scored Malone's first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning to give the Pioneers the 1-0 advantage.
In the top of the third, Saginaw Valley State scored two runs to take the 2-1 lead.
Malone retook the lead in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two runs to make it a 3-2 contest.
The runs kept coming for the Pioneers as
Alexa Holztrager singled to left field, driving
Emily Beck across the plate, making it 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Emily Isla drilled a single to left field, allowing
Emily Beck and
Shelby Hulin to score, increasing the Pioneers lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Cardinals had two players on base with no outs in the top of the seventh inning, but the Pioneers defense prevailed yet again, notching three outs in a row to grab the 6-2 victory.
Holztrager went 2-for-4 at the plate, tallied two RBI's and one run scored.
Juliana Shultes went 1-for-2 at the plate and collected her second RBI on the season.
Pitcher
Kari Hall threw her ninth complete game on the season and register two strikeouts.
Game Two:Malone scored two runs in the top of the second inning to grab the early 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals gathered one run scored in the bottom of the second inning to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The runs kept coming for Saginaw as they went on to score three in the third inning, two in the fourth inning, and two in the fifth inning to increase their lead to 9-2.
The Pioneers didn't give up as
Emily Beck singled to the left side, allowing her sister
Ashley Beck to cross the plate to make it 9-3 in the top of the sixth inning.
The Cardinals went on to register two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the 11-3 victory.
Emily Beck went 2-for-3 at the plate and collected a RBI.
Ashley Beck went 1-for-2 at the plate, notched two runs scored, and tallied a double.
