Women's Basketball Notes: Pioneers Enter Final Full Weekend of Competition

Chrissie Vaughan ranks third among GLIAC freshmen with 10.7 points per game.

The Malone University women's basketball team looks to avenge a pair of earlier-season setbacks in its final full weekend of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) competition, taking on Wayne State University (MI) at home Thursday, February 18th in a 6:00 pm scheduled tip-off before traveling to Findlay University on Saturday, February 20th for a 1:00 pm jump. The Pioneers will play their final game of the season next Thursday at home against rival Walsh.

  • The Pioneers are coming off a 1-1 week in which they shot a season-high 54.0%, including 55.0% from deep, in a 79-64 win over Tiffin last Thursday before being tripped up at home in 75-42 loss to Ohio Dominican on Saturday
  • Three weeks ago, the Pioneers lost to Wayne State 71-63 in Detroit; Rachel Goddard tied a season high with 20 points in the loss...two days later, Malone lost at home to Findlay 78-53; Tara Schaffter led Malone with 13 points and six rebounds
  • Junior Rachel Goddard paces the Pioneers in scoring, averaging 13.3 ppg and leads the GLIAC in minutes per game (35.8)...the offensive catalyst is 2nd in the conference in assists (101) and 12th in the nation in assists-to-turnover ratio (2.53)...of Goddard's four career 20-point games, two have come against Wayne State...she scored a career-high 31 against the Warriors as a sophomore
  • Senior Tara Schaffter, Malone's top inside scoring presence, is posting 11.4 points per contest and has dished out 44 assists on the season...the 6'0" forward adds a three-point threat and has knocked down 19 triples on the season
  • Senior forward Bri Libertore is averaging a career-high 7.3 ppg and adds a career-best 46 assists...defensively, Libertore leads Malone in rebounding (6.5 rpg) and total blocks (15) and is second on the squad with 25 steals
  • Freshman Chrissie Vaughan leads the team with 29 steals...the 5'9" guard checks in with 10.7 ppg and ranks 4th in the GLIAC with 56 made threes...among GLIAC freshmen, Vaughan ranks 3rd in points per game
  • Three-point specialist Alaina Schwarz has netted 26 of them on the season...the junior guard has made at least one three in 11 consecutive games...after missing ten games earlier in the season, Schwarz recently became eligible for the GLIAC's three-point shooting percentage category in which she ranks 5th in the conference at 41.9%
  • In the loss to Wayne State, sophomore guard Alahna Singleton scored 16 points in 23 minutes off the bench...Singleton is shooting 50.0% from deep and has 15 threes in 10 games this season
  • As a team, the Pioneers have connected on school-record 197 three-pointers, recently surpassing the previous mark of 193...Malone ranks no.1 in the GLIAC in three-point attempts per game (25.2) and second in the GLIAC with 8.2 makes per contest

Wayne State Notes:
  • Since topping Malone 71-63 three weeks ago, the Warriors are 1-5 including losses in five straight...this past weekend, Wayne State dropped a 58-40 decision to Lake Erie on Thursday before losing 81-60 against Ashland.
  • Senior guard Brittany Streetman leads Wayne State with 13.4 ppg and is 5th in the GLIAC with 56 steals...the capable scorer has reached double-digit point totals in 10 of her last 11 games...she dropped 40 on FIndlay earlier this month
  • Shannon Wilson checks in with 13.2 ppg and the 8th most assists in the GLIAC (83)...the sophomore guard has tallied 24 or more points four times in her last nine contests
  • Senior forward Ashley Wilson is third in the squad in scoring (12.0 ppg) and leads the Warriors with 6.2 rebounds a night
  • In the win over Malone, freshman India Hawkins came off the bench to score a career-high 15 to lead four Warriors in double-digit scoring...Streetman added 13 points, Shannon Wilson added 11, and Ashley Wilson posted a double-double with 12 tallies and a game-high 12 boards
  • As a team, Wayne State is averaging 70.3 ppg on the year despite scoring just 55.0 points a night over its last four games...WSU is 2nd in the GLIAC with 63.3 field goal attempts per game
  • Defensively, the Warriors are 4th in the conference in rebounding (39.2 rpg), 5th in blocks per game (3.4), and 6th in steals (9.1 spg)...against the three-point shot, the Warriors are 2nd in the GLIAC, holding opponents to a 28.9% shooting clip from beyond the arc
  • Against Malone, Wayne State outrebounded the Pioneers 46-34 and held the Pioneers to 27.9% (8-of-29) from three-point range

Findlay Notes:
  • Since the 78-53 rout of Malone on January 30th ended a five-game losing skid, Findlay is 3-2 and in the thick of a playoff chase for the 8th and final spot in GLIAC Tournament
  • More recently, the Oilers split a pair of games last weekend, falling to Ashland 78-67 on Thursday before topping Lake Erie 61-56 on Saturday.
  • Sophomore guard Haley Horstman leads a trio of Oilers in double-figure scoring with 12.5 ppg...the 5'8 guard leads the team in assists (60) and steals (33) and ranks 9th in the GLIAC in shooting percentage (50.8%)
  • Senior forward Margaret Wuebker is posting 12.0 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds a night...she leads Findlay with 21 blocks
  • Karli Bonar is third on the team in scoring with 10.3 markers per contest...the junior guard leads the GLIAC with 70 made three-pointers and ranks 8th in three-point shooting percentage (41.2%)
  • As a team, the Oilers are one of the best shooting teams in the nation, ranking 8th in NCAA DII in three-point percentage (39.3%)...from the field overall, Findlay is 20th nationally and third in the conference, shooting 45.1%
  • In the win over Malone, Findlay tied their second-best shooting night of the year (52.5%) while holding the Pioneers to a season-low 25.9% figure from the floor and 14.8% from long range
  • Wuebker led all scorers with 19 points while 6'2" freshman forward Anna Hintz (6.8 ppg, 5.9 rpg) scored a career-high 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting
