Women's Basketball Notes: Pioneers Continue GLIAC South Play Against Wayne State and Findlay

Rachel Goddard scored a career-high 31 at Wayne State a year ago.

The Malone University women's basketball team enters its third week of GLIAC South competition with a road matchup with Wayne State (MI) on Thursday, January 28th at 5:30 pm followed by a home showdown with Findlay this Saturday, January 30th at 1:00 pm.

All-Time Series:
Malone is 1-5 all-time against Wayne State. The Pioneers' lone win was a 61-53 victory in the 2014 GLIAC semi-finals
Against Findlay, the Pioneers are 2-21. After losing their first 19 meetings, the Pioneers broke through with two wins in 2014.

Malone Notes: 
  • Winless in their last four games, the Pioneers are looking for their first GLIAC South win of the season after falling against Tiffin and Ohio Dominican last week
  • After burying 18 threes in the two losses, Malone stayed 2nd in the GLIAC and climbed to 15th in NCAA Division II with 8.6 made threes per game
  • As in previous weeks, the Pioneers remain no.1 in the nation in fewest personal fouls per game (13.1)
  • Rachel Goddard is 11th in the GLIAC and leads Malone in scoring with 13.7 points per game...the junior guard recorded a season-high 20 points in the loss to Tiffin last Thursday
  • With 27 assists in her last three games, Goddard is now 2nd in the GLIAC in total assists (78) and 1st in assists per game (4.6)...she is currently 11th in the country with a 2.7 assist to turnover ratio
  • Freshman guard Chrissie Vaughan led the Pioneers with 14 points against ODU...on the year, she is scoring 11.6 points a night and is currently 2nd in the GLIAC with 44 made threes
  • Senior forward Tara Schaffter is the third Pioneer in double-digit scoring, contributing 10.8 points a night...among GLIAC forwards, Schaffter is 4th in minutes per game (29.5)
  • Bri Libertore is 6th among forwards with 29.4 minutes per game...over her last three games, the senior forward has scored 12.7 ppg...on the year Libertore leads the Pioneers with 6.6 rebounds per contest 
  • Junior guard Alaina Schwarz, whose returned from injury to start each of the last three games, has made 16 field goals on the season, all 16 have been three-pointers
  • In Detroit last season, the Pioneers gave nationally-ranked Wayne State all it could handle, leading late in the second half but falling 81-74. The Pioneers received a gutsy performance from Rachel Goddard who scored a career-high 31 points
  • Two days later at home against Findlay, the Pioneers drained a season-best 15 threes and got 30 combined points from Goddard and Schaffter but lost 78-70 to the Oilers

Wayne State Notes:
  • After starting 1-7 in conference play, the last four games have seen the Warriors earn wins over Tiffin and Lake Erie and nearly upset GLIAC frontrunners Ohio Dominican and NCAA DII #4 Ashland, falling twice in double-overtime
  • On the season, the Warriors lead the GLIAC in FG attempts per game (65.1)... their up-tempo pace has resulted in the 4th highest scoring offense in the GLIAC (73.1 ppg)...the Warriors are also 4th in total rebounding (40.2 rpg) and 3rd on the offensive glass (13.2)
  • Defensively, Wayne State is 2nd in the conference in opponents' field goal percentage, holding teams to a 39.1% shooting clip
  • Shannon Wilson leads a trio of Warriors in double-digit scoring checking in with 13.2 ppg...the sophomore guard is 5th in the GLIAC in assists (68) and 8th in steals (37)...in the Warriors' loss to Ashland last Saturday, she knocked down 6-of-9 threes and scored a career-high 28 points
  • Senior forward Ashley Wilson is averaging 12.8 ppg and leads the team with 6.3 rebounds per contest
  • Senior guard Brittany Streetman is scoring 12.2 points a night and is 4th in the GLIAC with 44 steals
  • In the last three games for WSU, sophomore forward Payton Birchmeier is averaging 10.3 points and 10.0 rebounds including a 9-point, 15-rebound effort against Ashland

Findlay Notes:
  • Despite starting the season 5-0 in the GLIAC, the Oilers have dropped six of their last seven including four straight...last week Findlay loss to Lake Erie and Ashland but led the nationally-ranked Eagles at halftime
  • The Oilers come in scoring 70.9 points per contest...they are 3rd in the GLIAC in field goal shooting percentage (45.4)
  • Findlay is currently the 5th best three-point shooting team in the country, knocking down 40.4% of their deep balls
  • Junior sharpshooter Karli Bonar (10.3 ppg) leads the three-point attack with a GLIAC best 49 triples on 41.5% shooting - the 8th best rate in the conference
  • Haley Horstman is Findlay's leading scorer with 12.1 points a night...the sophomore guard leads the team in assists (45) and steals (25)
  • Margaret Wuebker is the third Oiler in double-digit scoring, adding 10.8 points and 5.7 rebounds an outing
  • 6'2" freshman forward Anna Hinz leads the team in rebounds, pulling down 6.2 a night in 19.4 minutes per game off the bench
  • Three-point specialist Lynsey Englebrecht leads the GLIAC in three-point shooting percentage (52.1%),making 29-of-55 on the year in just 13.7 mpg off the bench
