Women's Basketball Notes: Pioneers Home Against Tiffin Thursday; At Ohio Dominican Saturday

Rachel Goddard's 13 assists against Ashland was the 10th most in NCAA DII this season.

The Malone University women's basketball team will continue GLIAC South play this Thursday, January 21st with a home showdown with Tiffin University at 6:00 pm before trekking to Columbus on Saturday, January 23rd for a 1:00 pm road matchup with Ohio Dominican University.

  • The Pioneers are coming off an 0-2 week that saw them squander a 9-point 4th quarter lead while shooting just 29.3% from the field in a 52-46 loss to Lake Erie before bouncing back to shoot a season-best 51.7% in an 97-84 loss to NCAA DII #6 Ashland
  • In the loss to Ashland, Malone made a season-high 16 three-pointers on just 27 attempts (59.3%)...the 16 made threes was the single-game high for any GLIAC school this season and the second-highest total in school history (the Pioneers made 19 against Akron-Wayne in 2012) 
  • Chrissie Vaughan scored a team-high 19 points and made a team-high five treys against Ashland...on the season she's averaging 11.3 ppg and leads the team with 18 steals...the sharp-shooting freshman is 3rd in the GLIAC with 37 made threes
  • Rachel Goddard is Malone's leading scorer with 13.5 points a night...despite reaching double-digit point totals in 13 of Malone's first 14 games, she tallied just 7 points against Ashland but recorded a career-high 13 assists 
  • Goddard's 13 assists gave her the 5th highest total in school history and the 10th highest total in NCAA DII this season...the junior guard, who leads the GLIAC in minutes per game (35.8), is currently 4th in the GLIAC with 64 assists and 11th in the nation with a 2.8 assist to turnover ratio
  • Senior forward Tara Schaffter is averaging 10.9 points and 5.0 rebounds an outing...she scored 17 against Ashland including a season-high three triples
  • Senior Bri Libertore scored a career-high in the loss to Ashland, finishing with 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting...the 6'0 forward is currently 11th in the GLIAC with 6.6 rebounds per contest
  • In her first start of the season, Alaina Schwarz drained 3-of-4 three pointers on Saturday...the junior guard is shooting 43.3% from beyond the arc this year
  • Naomi Grandison was the 4th Pioneer to reach double-digit scoring against Ashland after registering 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting including 2-of-2 from deep
  • The Pioneers are 2nd in the GLIAC and 16th in the nation with 8.6 made three-pointers a game
  • Despite committing 6 fouls in the last 12 seconds in the loss to Lake Erie, Malone remains 1st in NCAA DII in fewest personal fouls, committing just 12.9 per game

Tiffin Notes:
  • First-year head coach Jason Mishler returns to Malone for the first time after four years at the helm of the Pioneers...he guided Malone to a 55-55 record and a GLIAC Finals appearance in 2014
  • After losing its first seven conference games, the Dragons have started to hit their stride, winning two of their last three including a 69-66 upset over Findlay last Saturday
  • Junior center Bre Nauman's 28 point, 10 rebound effort in the win over Findlay helped her to earn GLIAC South Player of the Week honors...on the season Nauman is 8th in the GLIAC with 14.3 points a night and 6th in the conference with 7,7 rebounds per contest
  • Forward Jordan Fraley, who has missed each of the last two games, is second on the team with 11.7 points and 4.3 rebounds a game
  • Freshman guard Ali Schirmer checks in with 10.4 ppg and is 11th in the GLIAC with 30 made three-pointers
  • Junior guard Kaylee Patton is scoring 8.0 points a night coming off the bench...she is 10th in the GLIAC in three-point shooting percentage (39.6)
  • Over Tiffin's last two games, freshman guard Allie Miller has scored 32 points in Fraley's absence
  • As a team, the Dragons are scoring 62.5 ppg and are 5th in the conference with 7.1 made threes per game
  • Tiffin is currently 2nd at all levels of NCAA in free throw shooting percentage (80.7%)

Ohio Dominican Notes
  • Through 16 games, the 12-4 Panthers are 3rd in the GLIAC in scoring (74.4 ppg), 2nd in rebounding (42.9 rpg), 2nd in blocks per game (4.8), and 4th in steals per game (10.9)
  • Senior Melissa Scherpenberg is 1st in the conference in rebounding with 11.3 boards a game...she leads ODU and is 8th in the GLIAC with 13.8 ppg...Scherpenberg is 4th in the conference in blocks (22) and 6th in steals (35)...the 6'1" forward is 8th in the nation with 10 double-doubles
  • 5'11" guard Lauren Bates is contributing 12.9 points and 4.9 rebounds a game...she is currently 2nd in the GLIAC and 7th in NCAA DII with 49 steals
  • Junior Madi Rittinger is scoring 11.9 ppg and is 10th in the GLIAC with 6.7 boards an outing,..the 6'0" forward is 2nd in the conference with 31 total blocks and 11th with 50 assists
  • Ohio Dominican is coming off a 111-106 double-overtime victory over Wayne State (MI) last Saturday
  • In the win, Rittinger went for 26 points and 14 rebounds, Scherpenberg recorded her 10th double-double with 18 points and 15 boards, Bates poured in 20 points, and sophomore guard Megan Eyre recorded a career-high 23 tallies and 6 steals
