Women's Basketball Notes: Pioneers Visit Lake Erie Thursday Before Home Clash With NCAA DII #6 Ashland Saturday

Bri Libertore leads the team with 6.3 rebounds a night and 11 blocked shots

The Malone University women's basketball team will begin GLIAC South competition this Thursday, January 14 when the Pioneers travel to Lake Erie College for a 5:30 pm tipoff. Malone will then return home to meet NCAA DII #6 Ashland University on Saturday, January 16 in a 1:00 pm scheduled tip.

All-Time Series:
After splitting a pair of games last season, the Pioneers are 15-5 all-time against Lake Erie. Malone dropped a 62-58 overtime decision last season in Painesville.
Malone is 9-12 all-time versus Ashland after losing twice to the Eagles a year ago, including an 82-47 defeat in Osborne Hall.

  • Malone is coming off a 1-1 week in which they rallied from 19 points down to beat Ferris State 58-56 before being tripped up by Grand Valley State 89-42
  • Rachel Goddard, who surpassed the 500-point milestone and hit the game-winning shot against Ferris State, is the GLIAC's eighth leading scorer with 14.2 points an outing...the junior guard leads the GLIAC in minutes per game (35.8), is 7th in the GLIAC in assists (48), and 8th in the nation in with a 2.8 assists to turnover ratio (48:17)
  • Senior forward Tara Schaffter, the only Pioneer to reach double-digits in the loss to GVSU, is second on the team with 10.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest...with 10 points this weekend, Schaffter will also reach 500 career points
  • Forward Bri Libertore is team's leading rebounder with 6.4 boards a game...the stalwart senior recorded a game-high 5 steals in the win over Ferris State
  • Freshman guard Chrissie Vaughan, the third Pioneer scoring in double figures (10.6 ppg), is 6th in the GLIAC with 29 made three-pointers...among GLIAC freshman she is 2nd in scoring and 2nd in minutes per game (32.7)
  • Freshman forward Naomi Grandison (6.7 ppg, 3.8 rpg) has bucketed 11 three-pointers this season including two clutch makes in the second half comeback win over Ferris State
  • As a team, the Pioneers have connected on 106 three-pointers...the second highest total in the conference
  • Malone remains number one in the nation in fewest personal fouls, committing only13.1 fouls per game

Lake Erie Notes:
  • The Storm are currently ranked 11th in NCAA DII with 11.8 steals per game and 15th in NCAA DII with 21.9 forced turnovers per game
  • Lake Erie is 13th in the country in turnover margin (+5.86)...they have recorded double-digit steal totals in 9 of their 14 games
  • Through 14 games, senior guard Shelby Carpenter is scoring 8.6 points a night...she is 8th in the nation with 44 steals
  • Guard Kayla Gabor is 10th in the GLIAC with 28 steals... the Storm's leading scorer is 7th in the conference with 14.4 points per game and leads the team with 5.1 rebounds a night
  • 6'1" post player Kaeding Skelton is chipping in with 8.3 points and 4.1 boards a night
  • Sophomore center Christine Dawson is 3rd in the GLIAC with 23 blocked shots
  • Lake Erie lost its last game against Northern Michigan 45-38. Skelton led the team with 10 points...sophomore Daija Jones added 9 points and 7 rebounds off the bench

Ashland  Notes
  • Dating back to last season, the Eagles have won 26 of their last 27 regular season games and are one of seven remaining unbeatens in NCAA DII
  • The Eagles are led by a pair of 6'1" sophomore forwards, Laina Snyder and Andi Daugherty, each averaging 15.4 points per game
  • Snyder, the two-time defending GLIAC South Player of the Week is 5th in the conference in scoring and 4th with 9.4 rebounds per game...the younger sister of former Pioneer standout Lindsy Snyder, Laina is currently 3rd in the nation with 51 steals and 7th in the GLIAC with 17 blocked shots
  • Daugherty, the 2014-15 GLIAC Freshman of the Year, is 4th in the GLIAC in scoring, 8th in rebounding (7.1), and 12th in total blocks (15)...she scored a game-high 24 points in a 69-63 win over Michigan Tech last Saturday
  • Junior guard McKenzie Miller (9.4 ppg) is 5th in the GLIAC in three-point shooting percentage (43.3)...through 14 games, she is 2nd in the GLIAC with 65 assists
  • Alex Henning (6.5 ppg, 4.6 rpg) is 4th in the GLIAC with 51 assists and tied for 10th with 28 steals
  • The Eagles are scoring a GLIAC-high 76.8 while allowing a GLIAC-low 54.4 points per night...their +22.4 scoring margin is 7th-best in the nation
  • In all of NCAA DII, Ashland is 9th in rebounding margin (+10.6), 4th in assists per game (19.9), 4th in FG shooting percentage (48.3)
