Northwood Pockets 5-2 Victory Over Malone In Series Finale

Catcher Matt Davis led off the top of the second inning on Sunday with his first home run of the season.

Box Score

The Malone University baseball team wrapped up its three-game weekend series at Northwood (MI) University on Sunday with a 5-2 defeat.

The Pioneers slipped to 17-28 overall and 12-17 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with the loss.  The Timberwolves, meanwhile, improved their record to 16-23 overall and 8-17 in the GLIAC after completing the three-game sweep.

Malone jumped out to a 1-0 advantage when catcher Matt Davis led off the second inning with a homer down the leftfield line.  The blast marked the first home run of the season for Davis and the second of his collegiate career.

The Malone lead then grew to 2-0 in the third when rightfielder Daulton Ritter crossed the plate on a two-out RBI single by first baseman Logan Gray.

The Timberwolves got on the scoreboard with an unearned run in the third and then evened the score with a two-out RBI single in the fifth.  Northwood later pulled ahead with a two-run double in the seventh and then tacked on an insurance run in the eighth.  This three-run cushion would turn out to be plenty for Timberwolves' starting pitcher Matt Theiss.

After giving up the two early Malone runs, Theiss settled in over the final six frames, retiring 18 of the final 21 batters he faced en route to the complete-game victory.

Right-hander Matt Litty started on the mound for the Pioneers and tossed the first six innings, yielding four runs (two earned) on five hits.

Third baseman Jon Crank accounted for two of Malone's five hits, lining a double down the leftfield line in the second and single to center in the sixth.

The Pioneers will look to bounce back on Wednesday when they return to action with a nine-inning game at Lake Erie College.  The first pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
