Pioneers Pocket Sixth Straight Win With 60-45 Home Victory Over Ohio Dominican

Senior guard Sydnee Penn racked up a game-best 19 points to help Malone to a 60-45 home win over Ohio Dominican University on Saturday.

Box Score

The Malone University women's basketball team (13-5, 8-4 GLIAC) captured its sixth straight victory this Saturday afternoon in Malone's Osborne Hall while hosting Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference opponent Ohio Dominican University (7-9, 4-8 GLIAC), defeating the Panthers 60-45.

During first-half play, the game was relatively close until the eight-minute mark when the Pioneers put together an 11-2 run stretching their lead to nine points, at 24-15 with 2:40 left in the period. During the run, Malone poured in numerous shots from outside. Leading the way was senior guard Sydnee Penn, who had an impressive first-half outing, connecting on five of six from downtown and totaling 17 points for the half. The Pioneers went into the half with a comfortable lead of 29-18.

Coming out of the half, Malone stayed focused and maintained its lead as the Panthers tried to battle back into the game. It wasn't until the midway point of the second half that the Pioneers put together another run, this one an 11-0 stretch, that extended their lead to 48-29 and created a gap too wide for Ohio Dominican to close. Strong defensive play throughout the game allowed the Pioneers to keep the commanding lead, as the Panthers could never quite get on track on their shooting from the field.

Three Pioneers managed to hit double figures this afternoon with Penn leading all scorers with 19 on the day. Junior guard Selana Reale added 12 with senior guard Deborah Simmers dropping 10 of her own.  Junior forward Lindsy Snyder grabbed seven boards for Malone this afternoon and reached a milestone of 500 rebounds for her career as she now stands at 501.  Snyder joined exclusive company with the achievement as she is just the 16th player in Pioneer women's basketball history to eclipse 500 career boards.

Joining Snyder in a team-high for rebounds was junior guard Logan Pastor who also tallied seven and posted a team-best six assists as well.

For the Panthers, Lauren Bates yanked down a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with eight points. Madi Rittinger played big off the bench with eight points as well, that matched the team high.

Malone made 22 of 53 (41.5%) from the field.  The Pioneers shot 39.1% (9-23) from deep and hit seven of eight from the line (87.5%).  ODU netted 21-59 (35.6%) from the field.  The Panthers struggled from behind the arc making just two of 11 (18.2%) and only made it to the line once for the game, splitting the pair.  ODU managed to grab two more rebounds than Malone with a 36-34 advantage.

A red-hot Pioneer team will be looking to extend their six-game streak next Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. as they travel to Hillsdale College (MI).
