Pioneers Lose Home GLIAC Contest To Grand Valley State 8-1

Freshman Youssef ElSonbaty earned the Pioneers' only win on the day with a three-set victory at #1 singles.

The Malone University men's tennis team lost a home contest on Friday to visiting GLIAC opponent Grand Valley State University (MI), which is currently ranked eighth in the ITA's Midwest Region Team Rankings, by a score of 8-1.

With the loss, the Pioneers fell to 8-10 overall on the season and to 1-3 in the GLIAC while the Lakers improved to 12-7 overall and to 7-0 in GLIAC play.

Youssef ElSonbaty, at #1 singles, earned the lone win for Malone on the day with a come-from-behind three-set win over his opponent by the score of 1-6, 6-4, 1-0.  Nate Davis battled his #2 singles foe to a tough 6-3, 7-5 loss.

In doubles, Alex Steinmetz and Steffan Dwarkasingh gave their #3 opponents all they could handle in an 8-6 loss.

Malone will next compete in another home GLIAC match -- vs. Ferris State University (MI), which is currently ranked second in the ITA's Midwest Region Team Rankings and 34th in the National ITA Team Rankings, tomorrow (Saturday) at 11:00 a.m.. The Bulldogs come into the contest with a 10-2 overall record and a perfect 7-0 mark in the GLIAC.
