Last Season's Records: Malone 1-9 (1-9 GLIAC), Ashland 11-1 (10-0 GLIAC)

Malone Notes: The Pioneers pulled out a 55-50 win in a shootout with Lake Erie College at Fawcett Stadium this past Saturday…The 105 combined points marked the highest scoring total ever recorded in a Malone football game…The Storm & Pioneers also established a new GLIAC single-game record in the contest with 1400 combined yards (833 for Lake Erie, 567 for Malone)… After posting 529 yards at Tiffin in week five and 490 yards in week six against Walsh, Saturday's 567-yard performance gave the Pioneers 450 or more yards in three consecutive games for the first time since 2008…Malone has tallied 180 or more rushing yards in six of its seven games this year and currently ranks sixth among the GLIAC's 15 teams in rushing with an average of 228.3 yards on the ground per game… Malone tallied 367 passing yards on Saturday, the highest output through the air for the Pioneers since a 403-yard performance in 2009…Malone also tied a school record with six TD passes vs. Lake Erie…Saturday marked the first time this season that the Pioneers did not commit a turnover.

Malone players to watch:  RB Justin Davis posted 80 rushing yards in Saturday's game while also pulling in five catches for 123 yards and three touchdowns…WR Jordan Phillips also went over the century mark against Lake Erie, recording four catches for 116 yards and two TD's to give the Pioneers two players with over 100 receiving yards for the first time since 2009… On the season, Davis has now tallied 452 rushing yards on 84 carries (5.4 average) to go with 15 catches for 219 yards and a team-high eight touchdowns (five rushing, three receiving)…Phillips has posted 22 catches on the year for 340 yards and three scores…QB Will Szpor completed eight of 11 passes for 123 yards and two TDs before leaving Saturday's game with an injury…QB Brandyn Eckhart then entered the contest late in the second quarter and picked up right where Szpor left off, completing eight of his 12 throws for a career-high 244 yards and four touchdowns while also registering 42 yards on the ground and one rushing TD…DB Demarco Donaldson continues to lead all of NCAA Division II with five forced fumbles…Donaldson has posted double-digit tackles in six of seven games so far this season and his average of 12.1 tackles per game ranks third in the conference.

Ashland Notes: After capturing the GLIAC Championship and tallying an 11-1 record a year ago, the Eagles opened the season ranked at No. 9 in the AFCA DII Preseason National Poll…However, Ashland struggled to overcome the loss of several key figures from last year's squad early on, dropping its first three games…The Eagles have won three of four since the slow start, including a 14-6 road triumph over Walsh University this past Saturday…The Ashland defense paved the way for the victory over the Cavaliers, limiting Walsh to two field goals and just 286 total yards….The Eagle defense is currently ranked among the GLIAC's Top 3 in both points (2nd at 21.3 per game) and yards (3rd at 365.9 per game) allowed per contest…Ashland's offense relies heavily on the running game this season as the squad ranks third in the conference in rushing (231.0 yards per game), but is last (15th) in passing (145.3 yards per game)…The Eagles are the least penalized team in all of NCAA Division II, having been flagged just 16 times for 144 yards through their first seven games.

Ashland players to watch: The Eagles have used four different players at the QB position this year in an attempt to fill the sizable void that was left by the graduation of Taylor Housewright, the 2012 GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year…Three of the four QBs have missed time due to injury, two of which were knocked out of Saturday's game vs. Walsh…Tra'Von Chapman has handled the most snaps this year, having thrown for 542 yards and four touchdowns, but the freshman left Saturday's game vs. Walsh with an ankle injury…Junior T.K. Rock relieved Chapman and completed seven of 13 throws vs. Cavs before he too was injured and replaced by sophomore Cory Fickiesen...While questions remain at QB, RB Anthony Taylor has provided nothing but answers for the Ashland running game, tallying 167 of his game-high 184 rushing yards in the second half of Saturday's victory…On the season, Taylor has racked up 1209 yards on 182 carries (6.6 average) with eight TDs and currently leads the GLIAC with an average of 172.7 yards per game…DT Jamie Meder, a USA College Football Preseason All-America First Team selection, leads the way up front for the Eagle defense, pacing the squad in tackles (62), tackles for loss (3.5) and sacks (1.5)…DB Kyle Tomko has made three of Ashland's GLIAC-leading nine interceptions.
