The Malone University women's basketball team collected a 68-58 home victory over visiting Ursuline College in Malone's Osborne Hall Saturday afternoon. The win lifted the Pioneers to the .500 mark, leveling their record at 11-11, while the Arrows dropped to 6-14 overall.
In the first half, the host Pioneers led the entire 20 minutes, opening a lead as large as 11, at 21-10, with 8:09 remaining in the period. The visitors rallied, though, to close their deficit to just 33-29 at the intermission.
In the final frame, Ursuline continued its rally and even grabbed the lead on two occasions, the last time at 46-45 with 12:59 left in the contest. From that point, though, Malone began to slowly stretch its lead and pulled away for the final 10-point win at 68-58. The Arrows did cut the lead to just five, at 58-53, with 4:32 remaining but a pair of Pioneer three-pointers by guards
Selana Reale and
Cindy Netti over the next minute and a half put the Malone lead back to 11 points and basically put the game out of reach for the visitors.
From the field, Malone connected on 43.5% (27 of 62) of its attempts while Ursuline netted 38.9% (21 of 54). The teams each drilled seven three-point baskets although the Pioneers had a slightly better percentage on 21 attempts (33.3%) to the Arrows' 30.4% (23 attempts). At the foul line, Malone converted seven of nine tries for 77.8% while Ursuline drilled nine of 13 attempts for 69.2%. In addition, the hosts held a 38-32 advantage in rebounding over the visiting Arrows.
Three Pioneers hit twin figures in scoring as forward
Lindsy Snyder led the way with 18 points while guard
Sydnee Penn followed with 15 points. Snyder and Penn also each grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in the contest. Reale, who connected on a team-best three three-pointers, posted 13 points, five rebounds and a team-high seven assists. Netti tossed in eight points, including a pair of treys, while forward
Sarah Bardall notched seven points, six rebounds and four assists.
Ursuline's Brooke Trauthwein led all scorers with 28 points while Katie Cappello added 16 points to the Arrow cause. Capello also yanked down an impressive game-high 18 rebounds for Ursuline.
