Selana Reale scored 12 of her career-high 19 points in the second half Thursday night to help the Malone University women's basketball team remain unbeaten on the road with a 60-47 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Lake Superior State University. The Pioneers (5-1 overall, 2-1 GLIAC) led the contest by just three at 45-42 with five minutes to play, but then put the game away by outscoring the Lakers (1-6 overall, 0-3 GLIAC) 15-5 the rest of the way.
Forward
Deborah Simmers came off the bench to key Malone to a 28-23 halftime advantage, tossing in 12 of her season-high 17 points over the first 20 minutes. Reale then opened the second half by converting a three-point play, pushing the Pioneer advantage to 31-23.
However, Malone would then go cold for the next six minutes as the Lakers fought back to knot the game 31-31 with eight unanswered points. Lake Superior State tied the score again at 33-33 and 35-35 but was unable to grab a second-half lead before the Pioneers managed to pull away down the stretch.
Simmers finished with five rebounds and four assists to go with her 17 points. Guard
Logan Pastor added 11 points and seven boards.
Guard Raven Trammell led the way for the Lakers with 15 points while forward Maria Blazejewski tossed in 12 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Malone enjoyed a 39-34 edge on the boards, including a 13-5 advantage on the offensive glass.
The Pioneers shot 32.8% (19 of 58) from the floor, 26.3% (five of 19) from three-point range and 77.3% (17 of 22) at the foul line over the course of the evening. LSSU made 36.2% (17 of 47) of its field goals, 30.0% (three of 10) of its threes and 90.9S% (10 of 11) of its free throws.
Malone will attempt to improve its road record to 4-0 Saturday afternoon when the squad concludes its weekend trip to Michigan with a 3:00 p.m. showdown against Northwood University (4-3 overall, 2-1 GLIAC). The Timberwolves will provide live video, audio and statistics during the contest.
