Football Preview Notes: Malone vs. Saint Ambrose

Series:
Saint Ambrose has won each of the three previous meetings between the schools. Last season, the Fighting Bees posted a 28-7 home victory over the Pioneers. The squads also previously met in 2009 and 1998.

Coaches:
Malone – Eric Hehman is in his second season as the Pioneers' head coach, having led Malone to a 5-7 overall mark since taking over the reins of the program in 2010. Prior to arriving at Malone, Hehman had spent the previous five years as the head coach at NCAA Division III Greenville (IL) College where he led the Panthers to a 28-22 record and a berth in the 2009 NCCAA Victory Bowl.
St. Ambrose – Mike Magistrelli is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Fighting Bees and has compiled a 28-17 record at the school. Under Magistrilli's guidance, Saint Ambrose won back-to-back Mid-States Football Association Midwest League Titles in 2007 and 2008. Magistrelli had served as the defensive coordinator for the Fighting Bees for three years prior to becoming the head coach in 2007.

Malone Notes – The Pioneers are off to their first 2-0 start since 2002 after recording a pair of thrilling victories during the first two weeks of the season…Malone topped Tiffin University in double overtime in week one and then, last week, posted a 30-27 win at McKendree (IL) University on a last-second field goal…Through the first two weeks of the season, the Pioneers rank sixth out of the MSFA's 19 teams in scoring offense with an average of 35 points per game….Malone also ranks fifth in the MSFA in rushing offense with 200.5 yards on the ground per game…The Pioneers have scored five TD's on their five trips into the red zone this year.

Malone players to watch: WR Justin McLean is averaging a whopping 43.8 yards on his six kickoff returns so far this year…McLean broke the Pioneer record for longest kickoff return in week one by running back a kickoff 90 yards for a TD….He then re-wrote the record book again last week with a 99-yard kickoff return for a score against McKendree…Prior to 2011, Malone had never had more than one kickoff returned for a TD in a single season…McLean has also made an impact in the passing game with nine catches for 95 yards and a TD…RB's Daryon Mosley, Malik Felton and Emil Chambliss have all made solid contributions so far this season…Mosley has tallied 153 rushing yards on 23 carries (6.7 average) with two scores…Felton leads the MSFA in catches with 16 pass receptions, totaling 112 yards …Chambliss, meanwhile, has gained 149 rushing yards on 29 attempts, with one TD catch and three TD runs…Freshman QB Will Szpor has been solid through his first two games, completing 45 of 67 pass attempts for 375 yards and two touchdowns…LB Antonio Scassa paces the defense with 19 total tackles and a sack…Fellow LB Brandon Commodore has made 15 total tackles with four tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble….DB Glen Raphael has posted two interceptions and defended or broken up six passes through the first two weeks.

Saint Ambrose Notes – The Bees opened up the year with a 44-9 home win over Trinity International (IL) University before suffering a tough 34-33 loss at home last week to the University of Saint Francis (IN), the squad currently ranked at #2 in this week's NAIA National Poll…Saint Ambrose held a 27-14 lead midway through the third quarter before USF fought back for the narrow win…The Fighting Bees are currently fifth in the MSFA in scoring offense at 38.5 points per game and sixth in total offense with an average of 393 yards per outing…SAU is also the second-least penalized team in the MSFA with just 10 penalties for 63 yards through the first two weeks.

Saint Ambrose players to watch: WR Barney O'Donnell ranks first in the MSFA in receiving yards, all-purpose yards and scoring as he has hauled in 11 catches for 281 yards and five TD's through the Fighting Bees' first two games …O'Donnell has also tallied 34 rushing yards, returned four punts for 57 yards and one kickoff for 23 yards to give him 395 all-purpose yards on the season…RB Anton Wilkins is the MSFA's fifth-leading rusher, having gained 194 yards on 34 carries with two rushing touchdowns… Wilkins has also snagged five catches for 48 yards…QB Eric Williamson has completed 24 of 44 pass attempts for 394 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions…On defense, LB Adrian Leal has posted a team-high 17 total tackles with two tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble…DB John Michaletti follows with 15 total tackles…Michaletti has also registered one interception and recovered a fumble…LB Andrew Briones has notched 14 total tackles with one tackle for loss and an interception…DL Ryne Diehl has posted 13 tackles with three tackles for loss, two sacks, a forced fumble and one fumble recovery…DB James Hannah-White has made four stops and returned an interception 62 yards for a TD in week one against Trinity International.
