The Malone University men's tennis team, led by first-year head coach Tim Springirth, opened its 2011 spring season by competing at NCAA Div. III The College of Wooster on Saturday. The Pioneers came up just short in their bid for a first-match victory, though, as the team suffered a 5-4 setback against the host Fighting Scots.
Malone opened by winning two of the three doubles matches but pocketed just two of the six singles matches that followed.
Alex Steinmetz was the lone Pioneer to post victories in both of his matches – an 8-6 victory at #2 doubles with
Hunter Atkins and a 6-2, 6-2 win at #3 singles. Number #1 singles player
David Cairns only played in the doubles competition in this match as he is still not fully recovered from an injury.

With the loss, Malone is now 0-1 overall on the season while Wooster improved to 1-0. The Pioners will next compete at NCAA Div. III Oberlin College on Saturday, February 12th at 1:30 p.m.
