Ohio Dominican Pulls Away For 53-43 Victory Over Pioneers

Guard Lauren Myers tossed in a team-high 14 points in Tuesday's hard-fought defeat

Box Score

The Malone University women's basketball team suffered a 53-43 home loss to NCAA Division II Ohio Dominican University Tuesday evening as the visiting Panthers used a late 9-0 scoring run to put the contest out of reach.  Pioneer guard Caitlin Sharp hit her second three-pointer of the night with just under eight minutes remaining to cut the ODU lead to 40-37.  The Panthers would not surrender their three-point advantage, however, as a stingy Ohio Dominican defensive effort held Malone scoreless over the next seven minutes of the contest.  Sharp and fellow guard Lauren Myers each hit treys to end the Malone offensive drought, but the Panthers managed to sink all four of their free throws in the final 30 seconds to cement the 53-43 triumph.  The Pioneers' overall record slipped to 0-2 with the hard-fought defeat while ODU opened its season with a “W”, improving to 1-0.

Malone struggled on offense in the early going, hitting just one of its first 13 shots from the field to fall behind 11-4 midway through the opening period.  However, the Pioneers bounced back with a 14-6 surge, hitting six of their next eight field-goal attempts to grab an 18-17advantage with five minutes to play in the first half.

Malone went to the locker room down 24-22 and then remained within striking distance for much of the second stanza until the Panthers managed to pull away late.

On the evening, the Pioneers knocked down 17 of their 55 (30.9%) shots from the floor, six of their 26 (23.1%) three-pointers and three of their four free (75%) throws. Ohio Dominican countered by making 21 of 63 (33.3%) field goals, six of 24 (25.0%) treys and five of seven (71.4%) attempts from the charity stripe.  The Panthers held a 44-37 advantage in total rebounds, including a 10-4 edge on the offensive glass.

Myers paced the Pioneers with 14 points while Sharp added 11.  Guard Sydnee Penn posted six points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.  Forward Lindsy Snyder also made solid contributions with five points and eight boards.

ODU Guard Katy Rasor sank five of 10 three-pointers en route to tallying a game-high 17 points.  Guard Meredith Fox also reached double figures for the Panthers with 13 points.  Forward Abby Glover added eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

The Pioneers will be back in action over the weekend as the squad travels to the Hoosier State to compete in the Huntington University Classic.  Malone will take on Concordia (MI) University (5-0 overall) on Friday at 8:00 p.m. before facing Indiana Tech (4-0 overall) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
