Box Score
The Malone University men's soccer team lost a 2-1 overtime decision at NCAA Div. II #21 Saginaw Valley State (MI) University on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Pioneers fell to 9-8 on the season while SVSU climbed to 12-3-3.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as
Rubem Miranda drilled a shot into the net off an assist by
Kelvin Aquino at the 22:43 mark of the first half. The Cardinals tied the contest 11 minutes later on a goal by Bryan Winnega (assist by Zach Walega) as the 1-1 tie held up as the halftime score. Neither team was able to pierce the net in the second frame, sending the contest into the fourth OT affair for Malone on the year and the seventh for the hosts.
The contest appeared to be going into a second overtime but with just 50 seconds left in the first OT period, the Cardinals' Walega was able to post the game-winning goal for Saginaw Valley State.
The hosts held a 19-10 advantage in total shots on the day while also holding the Pioneers to no corner kicks in the game, posting a 9-0 margin in that category. Malone goalkeeper
Felipe Monteiro collected six saves in the contest while Cardinal goalie Jason Wise had four.
Malone will be back in action, for its final regular-seaon match of the year, on Monday in a 3:30 p.m. game at Urbana University (6-9-1). With a win, the Pioneers would clinch a berth in the four-team Ohio Independent Championship tournament which begins on Thursday (Nov. 3rd) with the seedings, pairings and times to be determined next Tuesday.
