BRIDGEPORT W.Va. - A clear blue sky was shining over the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia at the Bridgeport Athletic Complex. Salem University (3-6-2) hosted the Malone University Pioneer men's soccer team (2-7-1) for game two of the series this season. Malone entered game two with an intent for growth after falling to them 4-1 in late August. While learning and chemistry was improved upon, the Pioneers lost to Salem 1-0 in the rematch.
The first half was full of Salem attacks. Salem totaled nine shots and five corner kicks in the first half. The Pioneers had opportunities as well with a combined four shots taken in total by
Andrew Walubengo,
Sean Waweru,
Drew Kapsak, and
Julius Eckmann. Malone did what they could to defend the Tigers' advances into their defending third.
Roman Sigafoos (1-3-1) had four saves, but the Tigers found the back of the net in the 16th minute to take a 1-0 lead that remained until halftime.
In the second half, Malone was on in the attacking third for a fair amount of half. While they were outshot 4-1, the team's advancements resulted in a clear, or a goal kick. The Pioneers had one shot by
Dionysios Tsirambidis that was saved by the goalkeeper. Sigafoos' three saves kept Salem off the board in the second half, but ultimately, the Pioneers lost to Salem 1-0.
The road trip doesn't end here for Malone. They will return to Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play on Thursday, October 8 at Lake Erie College. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 P.M.
